As if our obsession with owning books weren't enough to deal with on its own, we've now also become obsessed with the "bookcase of the day" feature on Jamie Meares' blog, I Suwannee. The book storage solutions she posts are always fun to admire, but the one that greeted us at the start of this week was especially charming. From this angle, Ariel's shelves look great, but fairly ordinary, right? Just click through to view the DIY surprise that makes these shelves special...

Ariel's boyfriend built these shelves from recycled wood, and then they lined the bottoms with wallpaper scraps. Such a great idea, especially for a loft area, where shelves can extend high above eye level!

Even if you don't have wallpaper scraps to use up, this project would be easy enough to do. Pick out papers in complementary patterns from a place like Paper Source (which even organizes their papers into color palettes) and use Mod Podge or a similar product to decoupage the paper onto the undersides of your shelves.

That's freaking awesome!

This is a really fun, simple idea. These are the types of details that give projects a 'designer look' and so well done. Every room needs an element of surprise and/or whimsy!

Love the color-coded arrangement.

pretty, yes. But do they have a 20ft light ladder just off-camera so they can actually get to the books?

ooh, pretty . . .

what a fantastic blog... I'd heard of it, but for some reason never clicked over. Thanks for the cross post -- I love finding gems like this.

Wow! I love it!

How cool would it be if the paper color coordinated with the color of the books on the shelf!

This is a lovely touch, and I too really like the food cans as bookends, a great idea.

awesome idea....!

love it, minus the color-coded book arrangement -- not that this has been discussed on AT. ;)

I like the patterned shelves, and I like the color-coded books, but not necessarily together. :) This looked more appealing to me from above. From below, it's a little busy.

I love it!!! I am more interested in how they seem to be floating shelves, but I can see the shelf brackets from the front but nothing beneath. There is no puckering to indicate that the papering hides this. Can anyone tell me how they pulled that off???

So great!
But what's with the candles on the window sill?
view teacupcake's profile
Jan, I'd guess they used flat headed and/or countersunk screws.

That's darned clever!

brack appears to be on top? "L"

The different designs are a bit busy for me, but I LOVE the shelving otherwise! It's also nice to see actual literature on them. Book collections shown on AT are almost always filled with art/design books.

yes it looks like the brtackets are mounted to the top of the shelves and the books hide them, that way they float more.
I don't know how secure that would be though for a heavy object like books. The bottom shelf looks like it is bowing a bit.
Love the sugar and the can ideas though, so good. I like that it goes with the color coding but it would be cool to do all the bookends as cans as a warhol tribute. You could even puncture the bottom of the cans to get the soup out, then fill with something heavier like sand, then seal it, so that you get a more substantial bookend.

It's not practical at all unless you own one very sturdy ladder (and then where would you prop it where you wouldn't knock down the shelves), never ever read the books (color coding ruins that), and live in an area that never ever has even the slightest of earthquakes (which is equivalent to no where).

Great use of that wall and visually nice!
Your blog is great too.

one thing that concerns me, are all the sunlight coming in from around the shelves. we all know what UV can do to books, and a book lover would hate to see their books discolored.
oh .... and 1 more thing, what about earthquake?

I like the idea of the floating shelves and the color coding of the books. However--I think if you're going to arrange the books by color, it should be done light to dark, left to right. Possibly I've worked in retail too long but the books look out of balance with black being on the second to top shelf and red on the bottom.

Great room!
I agree with kaybedub - black books on the bottom shelf.

and I have crazy high ceilings and tons of books.
I know what I'm doing next Sunday! :)

but I agree about the weight issues.
I will definitely use a heavy duty shelf and put the heavier books on separate shelves.
