David Imlay paints with an amazing amount of precision and attention to detail, but still infuses his images with beautiful textures and a color palette that is distinctly his own. Warm, almost vintage hues conjure images of old photographs taken closer to the middle of the century than today. These colors, coupled with Imlay's incredible ability to paint the subtle and delicate attributes of the fog and light of San Francisco, make for very romantic tributes to the city and its neighborhoods. Take a look at more images of our San Francisco neighborhoods, as well as the rest of Imlay's body of work here.
THIS is what I can justify spending money on. It's absolutely breathtaking.

I really, really like these. Excellent find.

These are nice--I see a definite similarity to Robert Bechtle's work...but there's a dreamy quality to these that I like.

Not quite as realistic, but still pretty cool paintings of San Francisco:

I highly recommend visiting his upcoming Open Studio

Sorry, these look like smoggy, dirty, ghetto east LA photos from the 70's. Did SF ever REALLY look like that? It literally seems like an LA aesthetic pasted onto SF. It works very well for LA, but here it just looks, well, lame imho.

I like the style but not the subject matter.

Very nostalgic but not sentimental...these are really beautiful! I would definitely have one in my house (if someone bought it for me.)

Amazing.

@chakapakuni LA ghetto, really? I can see that in the last four paintings -- those look like paintings from vintage photos of some of the poorer communities an hour outside of San Francisco proper -- but the other paintings totally look like a mix of downtown and neighborhoods like the Misison.
