Art in a Box, sponsored by the Compound Gallery in Oakland, costs $30 per month (for pick-up at the gallery), or $50 with shipping (and a bonus artwork thrown in). Each month subscribers receive a new original work of sculpture, painting, photography, or numerous other mediums. Subscribers can express preferences for particular mediums, but that's about the extent of what you can choose. The point is to support local artists, and to enjoy the surprise and wonder of receiving new works regularly.

Surely there's a chance (perhaps a likelihood) that as a subscriber, you won't love every piece that comes to your door. But the Compound Gallery will be sponsoring subscriber events where participants can get together and exchange artworks. And of course, you can always give the pieces as gifts! Gift subscriptions are also a great idea.
