Community-Supported Artwork: Art in a Box... the New CSA

Subscriptions aren't just for magazines and newspapers anymore. If you're a San Franciscan, chances are good that you subscribe to a CSA, Community-Supported Agriculture, which delivers a box of locally grown fresh fruit and veggies each week. But if art is your preferred form of sustenance, now there's a similar service that will deliver a new bounty of artwork to your door each month. Subscribe to Art in a Box, and you'll have a monthly new work from a local artist. Learn more after the jump...

Art in a Box, sponsored by the Compound Gallery in Oakland, costs $30 per month (for pick-up at the gallery), or $50 with shipping (and a bonus artwork thrown in). Each month subscribers receive a new original work of sculpture, painting, photography, or numerous other mediums. Subscribers can express preferences for particular mediums, but that's about the extent of what you can choose. The point is to support local artists, and to enjoy the surprise and wonder of receiving new works regularly.

Surely there's a chance (perhaps a likelihood) that as a subscriber, you won't love every piece that comes to your door. But the Compound Gallery will be sponsoring subscriber events where participants can get together and exchange artworks. And of course, you can always give the pieces as gifts! Gift subscriptions are also a great idea.

For more information, to check out some sample pieces or to sign up, visit Art in a Box online. (By the way, one of the curators of Art in a Box is Lena Reynoso, whose doggie throne you might remember from last week!)

The local artists whose work is featured above are (from left to right):
• Jake Gillespie
• Crystal Morey
• Tallulah Terryll
• Adrian Van Allen
• Kerri Lee Johnson

Beautiful artwork. The skeleton is very reminiscent of my friend Josie's printwork.

This sounds really interesting. I'm going try it! My walls need a little pick me up. Thanks AT!
