Etsy Find: Vintage Escapes

7.16.09 signs 2.jpg >Vintage signs, especially those from the 50s and 60s, have always appealed to us. Usually incorporating bold colors, interesting shapes and great typefaces, they appeal to our sense of nostalgia. This collection of photographs of hotel and motel signs caught our attention, especially those of the older escapes that may not still be around.

Laughing Dog Photography on Etsy has a collection of photos of such signs from various places. Most of the marquis reveal that these places have been long abandoned, but the signs continue to draw attention. Long before the days of big hotel chains with homogenized signeage, these all still retain a great unique personality to them.

We love the idea of having a pair or triptych of these photographs on our wall. They make us want to hop in the car for a road trip across the United States!

These bring back memories of summer vacations in Florida pre-Disneyworld. We always stayed in places with signs like that - I left my favorite pair of bright orange vinyl oxfords in one of them:(

Funny- I grew up in the Phoenix area (Tempe to be exact) and when I saw this post, the first thing I thought was that there were/are a ton of old signs like these in one particular area of Mesa. Then I clicked through to the shop and discovered that that's where the photographer is from, and where a lot of these shots were taken.
