You could totally make something like that yourself with some plywood and leftover paint from the rooms in your house just like they do on HGTV.

I agree with bepsf. If you are artistic you can make something similar, and it will be one of a kind. Love this picture, by the way.

What about a nicely frame Rothko, Albers, or Hans Hoffmann print? All of these are abstract painters with color theory as a basis for their work. I've seen so many to choose from online! You might try MOMA or another major museum online shop. I've seen prints sold through Amazon as well. Do a search for an artist you like and see what turns up.

I am a painter, and a huge advocate of buying local artists' work. Why not check out some neighborhood galleries and art shows? You could also try commissioning a local artist to make something with a similar, modernist feel to it. Some artists balk at doing commission work, but in this economy, I know I'd be happy for the opportunity!

Search for "abstract painting eames" or "abstract painting modernist" on eBay. Amazing MCM art does pop up very frequently there, and it's affordable.
I also second the DIY approach.

Well, it really depends on your budget. Try an art store if you have upwards of $500 to spend. Or check out Etsy- they have TONS of art.

If you're near a college, commission an art student to do something for you. I'm sure they'd love to make a little money and have something for their portfolio. My friend took a summer art course, but never studied it in college, and she can do some great abstract paintings, so I'm sure you could find someone affordable to meet your needs-- get in touch with a professor for reccommendations.

I'm loving that fireplace, btw.

Try going to www.art.com and search Abstracts, Hand-Painted Art, Ford Smith, or Rothko. They have a huge selection to choose from and you can get alot of artwork printed on canvas. They also offer Free Shipping on all framing and canvas pieces and always seem to have a discount available.

TrueTex beat me to it. Post a note on the board (or internal craigslist) of some local art schools, students should be able to recreate it relatively easily at a rate that would be quite reasonable to those of use who have a steady income!

I wish I could identify this! Make sure you're not spending an outrageous amount on any artwork that would be going over your fireplace... or just make sure that you buy something that can be replaced if you do love it.

As a custom framer, I've seen some damaged pieces come in need of repair/restoration. Most frames should be kiln-dried so it won't warp over the heat that's coming from the fireplace...

If it's a canvas, be prepared to have any soot/ash making way onto the canvas, even if it's under glass, make sure you have a dust-cover on the back.

Meh, I don't want to be a "debbie-downer" right now... I guess I'd rather have people be safe than sorry. Good luck!!!

Looks like this, or at least same artist (Sarah Stockstill)...

I believe she also sells her art through Z Gallerie.

And once, just ONCE, I'd love to see a post about abstract art where there is no chorus of "Just do it yourself!"

It's a nice enough piece, but agree with dunklekatze that you might have issues with rising heat damaging your artwork. Furthermore, the long rectangular shape with stripes is kinda safe and doesn't do that much for the room. Some kind of metal sculpture/wall art that swoops up the diagonal would add some needed interest and be more heat resistant.

OMG what a beautiful fireplace. I wouldn't put any painting on there. The fireplace should be the attraction in the room.

Since this is the local SF AT I highly recommend local SF artist and abstract minimalist painter Dee Adams of www.deedee914.com She can easily do a custom piece I'm sure as she did one for us here in NY for the spot above our fireplace. The work is stunning and a great investment.

This fireplace is our "Cerona" arched, direct vent fireplace. It is absolutely beautiful, and direct vent is the greenest type of fireplace you can put in your new or remodel project. We contacted our stylist for this photo shot, and unfortunately were unable to locate the name of the artist. The suggestions above sound marvelous, however. I am always a fan of local and original art!

Hello Philip,

This painting was created by a tallented young artist named Elise Remender. I don't have her on my website yet however I do have some of her tallented friends at http://www.lkgcontemporary.com I have photo's that I can send you if you email me at lkgcontemporary@msn.com. This is a group of some of the hottest Modern Contemporary artist to come around in a very long time. I've been in the art business for twenty years and I've never seen clients react to anything like thier work.

Peace, Greg Sanchez

Looks like the artist, Miss Remender, has been located..bravo, and some very compelling pieces...In theme of this discussion, and if the pursuit is an original contemporary work, I'd also like to recommend an amazing, and established contemporary artist, Sarah Stockstill. Based in LA, with roots in AZ, suggest link to Perrell Fine Arts, representing her work exclusively.
