Inexpensive Art

6-12-08 canary art.jpgFinding amazing artwork usually isn't a problem, it's finding affordable, amazing artwork that can cause some trouble. Here are our picks for incredible art that doesn't break the bank.

The Beholder has a great selection of paintings, illustrations, and photography. Many of the prints are also available in different sizes/price points.
20x200 features two pieces of art every Tuesday and Wednesday - usually a photograph and a work on paper. The best part is the prints start at $20 (!) for an 8.5 x 11".
Thumbtack Press has a nice collection of art ranging from $15 to about $45. We found a lot of cool prints that hadn't been covered all over the blogoshpere, so this might be a great resource for something more unique.
• Scoff if you will, but Gig Posters is a major step up from the band posters you tacked up in your dorm room. And while not all posters in the gallery are for sale, this website still has an amazing selection available to purchase, regardless.
Hang Art is probably well known to the San Francisco people out there, but if you've never heard of it, we recommend checking out the site. Not only is the artwork pretty affordable and carefully selected, but if you live in the area you can rent a piece, too.
• And last but certainly not least, the creative smorgasbord that is Etsy. If you don't know... well, just start clickin'.

Many photography foundations sell affordable limited edition photos by top artists (donated by the artists for fundraising purposes). These are museum-quality photos, though usually in smaller sizes than what the galleries sell for big bucks. My favorite sources (aside from the fabulous 20x200) are:

Humble Arts Foundation ($175 and up):
http://humbleartsfoundation.org/index.html

The Museum of Contemporary Photography (all photos $300)

San Francisco Cameraworks:
http://www.sfcamerawork.org/prints.html

Light Work ($250 and up)

Other good, but pricier options include:

Aperture Foundation:

Blind Spot:

Check my website! I make affordable original art (and talk about this topic in my blog all the time).

I just updated last night with new pieces:

If you want to talk sculptures, the nicest piece of "art" in my house is a small driftwood plank we found on the beach. On it, we've placed three beautiful, smooth stones in three different colours (white, dark grey, and pinky-grey). It looks amazing, and it reminds us of the different places we found each element.

Ha ha...

I see you've included GigPosters again (I recall the thread that started this two years ago. I recommended GigPosters).

Which led to:

Which led me to add a list to my Blog (GigantiCo) of affordable art.

My favorite bay area artist has some affordable and mid-range pieces, generally $500-$4000 (pricier because most are very large, for all you people out there with big walls!)

I've found amazing stuff just looking around on Flickr and contacting the artist directly. I've bought things ranging from $1 buttons to $400 paintings.

I have another tip. YayArt (http://www.yayart.com). It's a bit like 20x200, but everyone can submit art and everyone can vote. It's usually great fun. :) The best works get pulled into the store where they can be bought on canvas or as prints.

Some people think that democracy and great art are the opposites of each other. I think it works really well. But I'm biased because I helped start it - go see for you self. :)
