Instant Gratification: A Tribute to the Pursuit of Polaroid

3.18.9 instant gratification 1.jpgBy now it is pretty common knowledge that Polaroid discontinued production of their instant film in June 2008. A group of local artists that have been working with Polaroid, in many formats, have come together in a group show called “Instant Gratification: A Tribute to the Pursuit of Polaroid”. With a “get it while you can” mentality, these artists have been working with the instant film in its many manifestations while the clock ticks on availability of the film. The show is sure to be an exciting event, as well as one of the last opportunities to see (and buy) new work done with Polaroid…

As the supply of Polaroid film that remains grows smaller and smaller (and more expensive) it’s interesting to watch how people respond. Save Polaroid invites visitors to “read, share, and take action” and has featured Instant Gratification here.

The Impossible Project is striving to re-invent instant film for vintage Polaroid cameras. Having acquired Polaroid’s old equipment and one of its old factory buildings, it is working to develop a new film by 2010.

In the meantime, these artists are hoarding what film they can in order to continue their artistic endeavors with the format. There will be many works up and for sale, and what is sure to be an exciting opening evening. Space Gallery will host an opening for the exhibition on Friday, March 20, and the work will hang from March 20 through March 25. At the opening, there will be a live art piece that encourages the public to participate, as well as music and drinks. We'll definitely be adding to our collection of original artwork on Friday night!

But Taritac...it's just not the same.

EmmieB, it's just not the same because it's way better! :)

The faded, too dark, blurry instant polaroid look is something I can't drum up any nostalgia about. I understand that the technology was cutting edge for its time, but the product itself leaves much to be desired.

thumbs down Taritac...digital cameras are ruining photography as we know it. (although you can call me a hypocrite because i use my digital camera everyday.) ;)

I love my digital camera but I also love my Polaroids and my. gasp, film cameras. Totally different applications and results.

Fugi is apparently making some instant film which I'm going to try with some of my Polaroid cameras. I can't wait!

Great news, Polaroid is here to stay!

Film IS still out there, at affordable pricing through sites like Adesso Albums, who continues to offer Polaroid 600 film at discounted pricing (buy two; get a third for free).

Additionally, as Haleyo pointed out, The Impossible Project which consists of a group of ex-Polaroid chemists and manufacturing specialists, announced its plans to re-invent Polaroid’s instant photography under a new brand, Impossible b.v., with hopes of making the new and improved film available in early 2010.

Please help to spread the word that Polaroid is very much alive and here to stay, thanks to the help of Adesso Albums and The Impossible Project:
