Modern Mobiles by Chris Luomanen

Most people don't discover the kinetic joy of a mobile at home until they have a baby and buy one for the crib. But the current explosion in modern design options for kids has also ushered in its opposite: modern home accessories for adults that turn the dial from austere to playful.

Mobiles are a natural for this category: hanging sculptures that dance with light and constantly change. They're a distinctive way to incorporate art into a space.

Local Thing Tank designer Chris Luomanen has designed a line of modern mobiles that are perfect for modern contrast in rooms with high Victorian ceilings. Designed in six cutout patterns and generously-sized (30" by 20"), they're made from oiled mahagony plywood or opaque white acylic.

Chris' neutral-colored mobiles have the most impact (we think) when hung in rooms where they will contrast with your walls, as in this picture. (The models are Chris' daughter and sister).

$180 at Propeller in Hayes Valley and online at Thing Tank.

The mobiles are beautiful ... but the coffee table is amazing.

I agree about the coffee table. Who's it by?

Thanks for your kind words about the coffee table. I did that as well. Its a very simple construction. If you are interested in it, contact me. Maybe I'll do a small run of them.

Best,
