Plywerk Photo Mounting

Tacking art to the wall is sloppy (not to mention it can destroy the work), cheap frames generally look cheap (sad but true), and custom framing is, well, expensive. Aside from that there aren't a ton of options for effectively displaying photos and art around the home. Helping to fill that gap is Plywerk, a Portland-based company that specializes in inexpensive plywood mounting...

Here's how it works: Start by uploading your image to the Plywerk website or choose one from their artist gallery. Next, choose the size, plywood type, and finish you'd like to use. If you need any help with color correction or cropping, they can do that for an extra charge. Once you've made all your selections, the folks at Plywerk get busy putting together your piece. In about 7-14 days you get your photo sleekly mounted to plywood with a keyhole in back, ready to hang on your wall. You can also choose to order just the blank panels (shown in the first image above) and affix your image at home. We think the prices are quite reasonable and the finished product looks good, but we'd love to hear from you. Has anyone used Plywerk before? What were your thoughts?

We used Plywerk and we loved the results: Elegant, cheap, and fast. I recommend them highly.

I like it. It's not as cool-looking as photo's on Dibond, but I think it's cheaper. It also looks sturdy and really easy to switch photo's.

They also have a 'prodeal', that seems interesting.

Looks great! I have a bunch of nonstandard size prints and larger sizes (like a map) that I'd love to put up but it's just too expensive for me to frame them at the moment. I wonder if there's something like that in Australia?

In addition to Dibond there's a material called Sintra that's used for mounting. These materials come in large sheets, so you can mount really big pictures. Masonite is also used for this.

For those who can't even afford this, I had a friend who mounted a photo on a straw placemat. She normally has terrible taste, but that kind of looked cool.

This seems very DIYable. Size plywood, cut neatly, drill keyhole, sand, stain, adhere photo with some kind of liquid adhesive, smooth, set, done.

The couple who started Plywerk are a joy to work with...very professional. They even met me at a local Portland coffee shop to hand-off the finished product, saving me shipping costs!

Plywerk is great...high quality materials and very cool, professional folks. Be sure to also check out the photography of Kim Nguyen (I think she and her husband own Plywerk?); she exhibits at the Portland Saturday Market (among other places) and has an incredible eye. I've already snagged at least six of her pieces!
