apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

San Francisco Terrain by Conor Fennessy

5.22.09 terrain 3.jpgIt is hard to find someone that will doesn't agree that the terrain of our fair city is one of the most interesting in the world. As the most densely populated in the state, we have crammed ourselves into the more than 50 steep rolling hills and all along the coast of the peninsula. Our topography is one of the most fascinating qualities of our city, and has been translated into this sculpted painting.

5.22.09 terrain 4.jpgInspired by the actual site of the city, Conor Fennessy created this "4th dimensional Abstract Expressionist sculpted painting," as described by Jack Hirschman, San Francisco Poet Laureate. The 10.5"x10.5" gypsum tile is a sculpted depiction of the lay of the land, and appeals to our love for topography. Fennessy, owner of Conor Fennessy Antiques and Design, has long been inspired by San Francisco, and realized that much of this comes from the earth beneath his feet. This is a tribute to that intricate terrain.

5.22.09 terrain 2.jpgRecently the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Protocol adopted the piece as a gift for visiting dignitaries. The sculpture is also available at San Francisco Terrain, but is done in a limited edition. So, unless you fancy yourself a dignitary, if you would like to own this "piece of San Francisco," you'll have to buy it for yourself!

i don't think much of it as art, but would love to spend some time cross referencing it with a street map, to get a better idea of SF in 3D.
