Whether it's a recent transplant to the city or a visiting friend who loved the town, sometimes a gift for the home with a San Francisco tinge is the way to go. Here are a few of our favorites.
• If you've driven around the city at any length, you're no doubt familiar with the "Scenic Drive" signs dotting the roads. They follow the traditional driving tour of the city, hitting up all the spots guests to town want to see. This rendition by artist Annie Galvin is one of our favorites.
• We love taking guests to the observation deck at the De Young Museum. You get a view spanning most of the city, then afterwards you can check out some great art. These coasters may seem innocuous, but those in the know will recognize the pattern as that which covers the museum's facade.
• The beloved Ork poster. What's not to love? Gift one to someone who has yet to learn the neighborhoods. Or, give to a longtime resident and debate the accuracy of the demarkations. Available here.
• One major chapter of of San Francisco's rich history must be devoted to the Beat generation. Head down to City Lights, the nation's first all-paperback bookstore and the epicenter of beat culture in the city. While there pick up BEAT, a wonderful coffee table book filled with photographs and ephemera from the era.
Anything you'd like to add?
I'm a big fan of the Ork posters :) my friends love them!

Oh wow, I'd LOVE one of those posters! I'm planning on moving to San Francisco one day *grin* (At the very least, I'm going to do a one-year uni exchange in 2010-11!) I've only been once, and I'm already in love with the entire city. (Alas! The closest I have to a poster/map is my tourist Bay City Guide with the occasional pen mark showing how to get from the hostel to the number 30 bus stop.)
