apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Berkeley-based artist Sheila Metcalf Tobin gets much of her inspiration from her great-grandparent's Alabama farm, where she used to spend parts of her summer as a child. The connection to the earth that is fostered on a farm is apparent in her work, which features vegetables, fruits, various flowers and other assorted plants.

Metcalf Tobin often uses plywood on which to paint, and much like the relationship between gardener and soil, the make-up of the wood informs the artist's choice of subject. We like the play between the wood grain and the painting, and feel it adds a nice depth of character to each piece.
