The Gallery: Sheila Metcalf Tobin

"I found it when I was looking for something else"
We ate dinner at Bar Tartine last night, and while the food was lovely and the company superb, our attention was focused squarely on the walls. Or, more precisely the artwork on the walls, which featured kaleidoscopic views of flowers and plant life.

"Versa Line #1"
Berkeley-based artist Sheila Metcalf Tobin gets much of her inspiration from her great-grandparent's Alabama farm, where she used to spend parts of her summer as a child. The connection to the earth that is fostered on a farm is apparent in her work, which features vegetables, fruits, various flowers and other assorted plants.

"Succulent Bouquet"
Metcalf Tobin often uses plywood on which to paint, and much like the relationship between gardener and soil, the make-up of the wood informs the artist's choice of subject. We like the play between the wood grain and the painting, and feel it adds a nice depth of character to each piece.

If you made large prints of Succulent Bouquet or Heavenly, I would definitely buy them to bring my garden into my house.

Lovely wall designs. Only ones I've seen that I like.
