Tom McKinley at the John Berggruen Gallery

4-7-08 mckinley.jpgWe trekked down to Union Square last week for the monthly First Thursday gallery openings taking place in the area. The work of Tom McKinley immediately struck us for his incorporation of famous design staples into his artwork.

His style could be described as photo-realist, with each piece painstakingly depicting a variety of architectural exteriors and interiors. Signs of life are, for the most part, mysteriously absent, giving the pieces an almost cold, surreal feeling. However, we found ourselves drawn in by the juxtaposition of nature and modern design in some, and the question of what commentary might be attached to pieces such as a Saarinen table or Eames chair for a viewer.
