AT on... Making Time for Your Home

7-8-08 time.jpgAs contributors to AT, we suppose it comes as no surprise that we are firm believers in The Cure. We've found lots of inspiration and plenty of helpful ideas for our home in those pages, and we highly recommend it. That said, perhaps it will come as a surprise to know that we also have a really hard time following the steps outlined within...

The daily cleaning, flowers and small touches are great and a part of our routine, so that's not really the problem. It's finding time for all the larger projects that pop up occasionally and demand more than an hour or so a day. As with the rest of you, our life is a juggling act of jobs, loved ones, obligations and commitments, and despite our deep love of all things interior-design related, it is often our home that suffers when time is of the essence. We're planning on setting aside more time on the weekends to take care of those areas around the house we need to invest some energy in, but we're also wondering if you have the same problem, and if so, how do you insert your home into your packed schedule?

I loathe coming home from work everyday and cleaning, but I oftentimes feel there's no other time to do it if I want to try to keep my weekends free for fun stuff. I much prefer to just kick back and be lazy with my hub, and I know he prefers that over me puttering about the house doing whatever projects I have planned.

So, to keep the peace, about four months ago, I started waking up about about two hours earlier than normal (5AM instead of 7AM) and have had a wonderful time sewing, crafting, cleaning, puttering, painting, and doing all those things I never have time to do. Projects that demand more time (like painting) simply get split up over however many mornings.

Sometimes it's difficult to drag my ass outta bed, and I do sleep in occasionally, but getting started early in the morning on my endless to-do list really helps get me off to a good start. I get that oh-I've-been-so-productive-today feeling, and it is a great boost to both my mental well-being and metabolism.

I've been known to do the exact opposite of scmtngirl.
I'm really good at staying up til all hours of the morning doing "projects."

I'm very much a procrastinator, so doing those projects that have multiple steps and processes and require my undivided attention (yeah, I don't have much of that either) can only get done when I'm "in the zone" and that zone usually starts at around 9pm. :)

But then there are the projects that require sanding or hammering or other "ings" that make loud noises. I generally don't do those at night for the sake of my neighbors (and roommate), so they usually take an extra long time to get done. It's not that I don't have free time on weekends, it's just that when I DO have free time, I usually lack the motivation.

I love the Cure and the projects that I complete during it! It gives me the excuse and incentive that I need to set other things aside and focus on our home 2x a year.

I've never been able to complete the Cure media fast though.

I needed this too, as I am on a new path when it comes to my home. I have felt reluctant to put a lot of effort into a rental that I won't be living in as long as I already have been. Like most things you want to start or stop, it takes a change in thought. Now I am convinced that I must earn the next home (hopefully the one I will buy), and that I must prove to the universe that I can better care for the home I currently have. In the long run this will be practical as well, when I pack and move!
So, to sum up, I am trying to find the value (meditative or otherwise) in doing certain chores. I don't even know the 8 steps, but one thing I have found rewarding is making my own cleaning supplies so I enjoy cleaning.

Because I start work at 7:30 every morning I already get up with my partner at 5:30. I get to spend 1/2 hour with him before he has to go to work then I do the dishes the laundry etc etc... and am free all afternoon! And what a glorious afternoon! Because where I live is heavily industrial, built around the port, power plant and refineries they have to make the work hours in this town appealing. 7:30 to 4:00 Monday to Thursday and 7:30 to 2:00 on Fridays (Plus a free Pizza lunch). My partner has the same situation so we have plenty of time to lay on the couch. :)

My problem is that I get so jazzed by the "bigger" stuff that I neglect the day-to-day. Ask me to edit my book collection down by 50%? I'm all over it! Ask me to shop for food on a weekly basis? Gah!

Anyone wanna trade? I'll deep clean your closets and you can wash my dishes.

@ rockypondgirl -- seriously, if we were actually friends, I'd TOTALLY trade with you.
