AT On... Taking it to the Streets (and Sidewalks)

071009 sidewalk plants.jpgFirst we heard about Sunday Streets, an organization that blocks off a different neighborhood street every month to create a car-free area for the community to enjoy. Then San Francisco introduced new extended bike lane plans, and it seemed that the wheels (so to speak) were in motion. Three makes a trend, right? So when we learned of PlantSF's mission to turn unused portions of sidewalk into urban gardens, we figured this might be a full-blown movement...

Now we're noticing it everywhere - from dudes grilling out on the sidewalk to giant potted plants lining the streets, people are actively reclaiming the concrete jungle that lies right outside their front doors by turning it into an extension of their livable space. Think of it as front stoop sprawl, but in the best possible sense. It's creating a more community-focused vibe, and we're loving it. So have you seen or participated in any front stoop sprawl lately? Let us know in the comments.

I love where I live. The main street is just around the corner and everywhere you look there are huge potted plants on the sidewalks. Summertime is especially beautiful because of all the colorful flowers and arrangements the store owners put out.
