apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Giving: The Gift of Home

12-19-08 christmas house.jpgWriting for Apartment Therapy, it may be an understatement to say that thoughts of "home" are never far from my mind. But aside from decor and trends, the idea is especially pertinent during the holiday season. I'm lucky to be able to call two places home - my apartment and my family's house. But this year especially there are many who are much less fortunate...

AT hasn't covered the foreclosure issue much (seeing as we're primarily a site for renters), but it is no doubt part of a bigger issue that is on everyone's minds lately. I'll tell you my goal, and hope it is one I can share with other members of the AT community: this year, I'll aim to reallocate a portion of the energy I spend on my own home towards an organization that helps those who don't have one. Because as much as we want to make our apartments or houses, houseboats or condos as lovely as possible, all the beauty inside can't change what is going on outside the front door.

Me too. I am eternally grateful to own my humble little home. I want to help others have a decent place too.

So true!! Please post how we can help.

I love my little rented cottage and am grateful that I can afford it and that I have a job in these rough times.

Great post and great idea. The best place to look for organizations that work on a specific issue area is Idealist.org. Here's a link to the org search page where you can find over 80,000 local, national, or international orgs to volunteer with or donate to: http://www.idealist.org/if/as/Org/npo
