Names: James Lord and Roderick Wyllie
Location: San Francisco
Size: 750 sq. ft.
Years lived in: 3

Tucked into the Corona Heights hills, James Lord and Roderick Wyllie, principals in Surface Design, have fashioned an intimate live/work space in an Edwardian home. Its a dream setup for the landscape architect couple, who run the firm out of the first floor flat. You may have seen the garden they built out back in ReadyMade this spring; heres a look at their apartment upstairs.

Our style: Weird eclecticism.

Proudest DIY Moments:
Home: Roderick and James renod the living room to make the most of views and light: They took out the drop ceiling and opened the room up to the roofline, replaced tiny south facing windows with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors that lead to garden, and built a sculptural wall with cut-outs to block off the kitchen and create a large closet off the bedroom.

Garden: The couple leveled and retained the terraced garden, which is built on an axis to follow the diagonal grid of San Francisco. The garden serves as a gathering spot and laboratory for new plants. There are more than 100 species including a collection of succulents and proteas. The pair designed stacked fencing on three sides to allow for privacy and to let in light. The gravel is crushed granite, a permeable material often used in European public gardens.

Collections: Succulents, marble slabs, artwork

Dream Source: Handmade furniture at BDDW in Nolita, NYC

Reality Source: Vintage furniture stores in Redondo Beach, CA; parents, friends, salvage

Most embarrassing thing about my home: Roderick: I just bought a Bang & Olufsen phone. Its embarrassing to have a fancy phone, but Im happy with it and it easily disappears.

Biggest indulgence: 42-inch flat screen TV

Had forever: A Chinese watercolor painting from Rodericks grandmother.

What are the odds that two house tours posted on the same day feature homeowners who display Campari Soda bottles? :)

Wow, love that book bench and many other whimsical touches besides! Would love to have some text with the photos, but mostly just happy to see a *smaller* place featured. Many of the recent house tours have been over 1500 sq ft, but what I love about AT is the focus on the small.

i like pretty much everything in the pictures, but it would have been nice to have some more long shots, to show how it all goes together and get a sense of the space(s). i don't even really know if all those pictures (except the outside ones obviously) were in one room or not.

There needs to be more house tour here. Too many closeups without roomviews. There is a suggestion of a great space but I cant tell.

Why oh why only nine pictures? And close-ups too! Hardly enough to fix my AT addiction!
