Contest Master here. For my first major act as Contest Master, I hereby decree the new deadline for submissions to the 2007 Smallest Coolest Contest to be midnight (eastern standard time) Monday, April 16th.

While I know that many of you are waiting til tomorrow to submit your great small spaces, there are likely many others who haven't had the time to get it together.

We will still start posting entries next Monday, April 9th, and we will still start the voting then.

Please don't delay. Don't underestimate your talents. And don't worry. It'll be fun. Share your world with us. Enter your home, kitchen, nursery, or office/tech environment now!

The Inside Out: The Burning Man Home Away from Home, Part II

Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes via innovative intervention

Name: Burning Man residents
Location: Black Rock City, Nevada
Size: 400 to 1000 sqft.
Favorite Element: comforts of home

Our second and final week covering the spectacle of Burning Man from the Inside Out takes us to a chai roving mobile and 'Uchronia'--a Belgian Village in the desert.

'Uchronia' was a Belgian camp, 70 strong, that was responsible for a huge wooden sculpture of the same name out in the middle of the Burning Man playa. It is meant to refer to a point in the future when there is no time and was referred to on the street as a 'message from the future' or the 'Belgian waffle'.

Favorite Element: being there

In general, Burning Man media coverage focuses on the bizarre and the amazing--the art cars, the 50 foot tall burning effigies, the nudity, the elaborate costumes, etc. This week, Apartment Therapy steps inside for a more intimate exploration of the ephemeral utopia in the desert.

Burning Man housing says as much about a person as their non-Burning Man abodes. Ideology, style, and taste are on parade but just behind some tent fabric, shade canvas, or piece of plywood.
