Greenhouse by Jantze Brogard Asshoff

Let's just stop right there. Sometimes something is so charming and clever that we need a minute to sit down and take a breath. Come on...how great is this Greenhouse?!

Polish Paper Chandelier

5-08-08 polish2.jpg

We're not huge fans of lavish parties, we're more the casual dinner party types...just a candle or two here and a bunch of flowers there and we're ready for a simple get-together. But every once in a while, something so lovely and colorful comes 'round that we start yearning for an excuse to break out the party finery and get down on the dance floor.

Look!: Carlene's Old Lamp Makeover

We love this quick lamp revamp from Carlene (and her crafty husband). She's described the above version as "Scruffy brown lamp. Cute shape, ugly color". We agree. Check out the new version below the jump...

Mulch and a Backyard Makeover

5-06-08-mulch2.jpg

In the process of cleaning up and redoing our backyard, the amount of garden debris that we've collected has far outrun our weekly curbside composting pickup. In a recent dead tree branch and overgrown bush ambush, we were overwhelmed by the pile of branches that we amassed and had visions of spending nights sneaking our green piles in to the neighbors' bins for the next few years...lucky for us, we found a better solution. See pictures below the jump...

San Pablo Flea Market

5-06-08 sanpabloflea1.jpg
It's not that we don't appreciate the finer side of collecting, but there's something oh-so-satisfying about digging through a pile of possible discards and pulling out that perfect chair in need of a quick scrape-down and a coat of spray paint. You following us here? Good. Then you best hustle on over to our new favorite corner hangout: the San Pablo Flea Market.

Help Us Organize Our Space!

5-05-08 deskarea4.jpg

What we're sharing here, dear readers, is a bit of an embarrassment. But we'll push our shame aside in the spirit of this month's organizing and cleaning theme, and we're asking for your help!

Poison Oak: Defeating and Destroying

5-02-08 poisonoak2.jpg

So a couple weeks ago we're frolicking around our backyard, planting trees and digging holes when we notice some funny looking plants and this little rhyme starts running through our head, ""Leaves of three, let them be..."

Guess What's in Our Card File...

5-02-08 seeds1.jpg

Not recipes or addresses...we found a better use for our little gray box. See what we got going on below the jump...

Look!: Amy's Bright Yellow Bed

5-01-08 daylab1.jpg
We've been following Amy's home projects with a mix of humble admiration and sheer envy. Working with a "shoestring budget", she takes her time finishing her projects, knowing that to rush her ideas would leave her with something less than her vision. The end results, whether a revamped piece of furniture or a total room redecoration, reward her with their pure and total gorgeousness. Check out the before picture below the jump....

Best Fixer-Upper Housewarming Gifts

4-30-08 fixer2.jpg

Eleven months ago we closed on our first home. Ten months ago we moved in to our work-in-progress from the tent in the backyard. The time has flown by at record speed and we can't quite believe that last April we didn't know the difference between a reciprocal and a miter saw. Older and wiser now (chuckle chuckle, snort snort), we're often asked what items make good "fixer-upper" housewarming gifts. Our list below the jump:

SF House Tour: The Janssen Family's Roving Abode

We couldn't have dreamed up a more appropriate house tour to end our Small Cool month. You may remember Sara, Matt and Bella as finalists from the contest last year. We were impressed by their declaration, "Small is BETTER! Even with a 3-year old and surely more on the way, we will never go back. Small is the new big!", but even more impressed with their follow through. Way to put your money where your mouth is....check it out.

Spiders in the Shower

4-29-08 spider.jpg

We've recently noticed an increase in bathroom visits by our arachnid co-dwellers and we gotta say...we're not quite ready to break down our neighborly barriers and invite them in. Our general code-of-conduct is starting to reveal a major flaw...

SF Flower Box Award: Berkeley, 4th Street

4-28-08-flower2.jpg
We spotted this lovely planter whilst stopping for a quick cup of coffee. We like the oversize container, the simple one-color arrangement and LOVE the amazing fiery hue of those flowers...not a bad way to start the morning, eh? Close ups of the blooms below the jump...

Good Finds: Peter's Scavenger Lawyer's Bookcase

4-25 bookcase2.jpg
Nothing makes us happier than to play matchmaker to some treasure up for grabs and an empty apartment or home. Remember our friends over at the Cactus Jungle? We got a note from them, a few days after we featured their fantastic store, to thank us for hooking them up with some Scavenger goodness...read about their find after the jump.

Close-Up!: Derik's Tchotchke Organization

4-24-08 dvb1.jpg

We're in the midst of an office organizing overhaul (i.e. HELL) and we're trying to come up with a practical and clever way to organize our "creativity" (i.e. MESS). We were particularly blown away by Derik's gorgeous color coordination and wish we had such fine looking doodads hanging around our digs...

Alden Lane Nursery

4-24-08 alden1.jpg
logotree.gifIn case you hadn't noticed, we've succumbed to the gardening bug. It came over us slowly, but it's completely overwhelmed our little brain and driven us to such madness that we recently drove to Livermore in search of one elusive Morello cherry tree. It couldn't just be a local nursery for us, no ma'am, we found our beloved at Alden Lane.

TileVault: Piedmont High School

4-23-08-tile3.jpg

  • What: Mosaic in the hallway, maybe an old drinking fountain decorative alcove???
  • Where: Piedmont High School, Piedmont
  • When: Tuesday, April 22, 8:15pm
  • Why: Stumbling around the hallways waiting for our German class to begin, this caught our attention. We were surprised to see a hand-painted, colorful mosaic in the hallways of a public school...sort of reminded us of our fluorescent-lit hallways days, only much nicer....

  • Garden Update: The Vegetables are Growing!

    4-22-08-garden2.jpg

We are such proud parents. Just look at how much the little seedlings have grown! The tomatoes won't be ready for a while, but our lettuce was just begging to be harvested....

    Look!: Ugliest Ceiling

    4-22-08 ceiling2.jpg
We much prefer to share beautiful images with you, dear readers, but occasionally something is so earth-shatteringly awful that we can't hold back.

    Katz's Cradle
    Dwell: May 2008

    4-21-08-dwell1.jpg

We're gonna go out on a limb here and admit that we're a little bit over the industrial warehouse look. We're bored with steel and exposed beams, tired of concrete floors and cool marble. But guess what? Against our better judgment, we've fallen deeply, madly and unabashedly in love with a home made entirely of concrete. Can't really get much more industrial than that, eh? We dare you not to fall in love, too. More photos below the jump.

    Trip Around the Wool Blanket

    4-17-08 woolblanket1.jpg
This lovely handmade patchwork blanket is quite possibly one of the most beautiful blankets that we've seen. Ever.

SF Flower Box Award: Berkeley, 6th Street and Allston

    4-15-08-flowerbox3.jpg

Wow...we're a bit floored by this beauty of a plant. More photos and jaw-dropping below the jump...

    Feel More Human

    4-15 human2.jpg

We're not trying to claim an eco-friendly prize here, and our life is full of hypocritical idiosyncrasies, but we feel that we do our darndest....and isn't that the point? If we use our travel mug 29 days, can't we be forgiven for that one day in the month when we forgot it? We're part of the group that follows the tortoise, rather than the hare, when it comes to reaching a goal. All of this to explain why we think the new online store, Feel More Human, is a great step in the right direction.

    Trove

    4-15 trove12.jpg

We're always keen on a good discount, especially if it's for something we've had our peepers on to begin with...that's why we walked away light-headed after our visit to Trove. So much treasure, so little time...

    Serene Camping Postcards

    4-11-08 camping1.jpg

It's true...we have a sweet spot for redwoods. And camping. And notecards. And all of those things together.
