Mamma Rocking Chair

Yes, it's definitely in the stratospheric price range -- but the Mamma Rocking Chair is so striking that we just had to blog it.

Created by Canadian industrial designer Patrick Messier for Sophie Fournier upon the birth of their child, the gently curving Mamma rocking chair is made from a single piece of fiberglass, and has a special high gloss urethane finish.

The limited edition chair is available for $6,000 at The Magazine and Babygeared.

Striking, yes, but if I was rocking a baby (which, as I understand, often happens at night when you're longing for your nice comfy bed) I'd want something that was a little more comfortable than fiberglass with a high gloss urethane finish. Like maybe a cushion in there somewhere? Also, you'd have to keep your knees awfully close together to even fit into the thing. Oh well, at $6000, I'm never going to have to worry about it, but sheesh! Sometimes designers go way past innovative design, and forget about function, imho.

I agree smallcitybeth. I was wondering if, upon being presented with this chair as a gift, the new mother thought something along the lines of, "oh geez, what the hell am I supposed to do with this? I can't hurt his feelings but I'll kill me and the kid in this contraption. Crap."

A chair for mother and child should have arms so that you can rest your arm while nursing or bottle feeding the baby. also when rocking the child to sleep.

It seems to be one of those products where the artist is happy if just one person buys it. One really sadistic person, one person who puts aesthetics above all else. Its a piece of art and I imagine the user will be the buyer. I would hate to get it as a present. LOL
