apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bathroom Seating

11-20-08 bathroom chair.jpg... Besides the obvious seat, that is. Most apartment bathrooms only allow for the necessities, but what about those rare spaces with a little room to spare? The bathroom is not usually thought of as a place to gather, but a chair can be a welcome addition, all the same.

We had a little wooden seat in our last plus-sized bathroom, and found it to be helpful. But how about an upholstered chair, as seen here? Does the thought sound cozy or unnecessary? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

My ex and I used to work different schedules and I used to get up early and sit in the bathroom while he showered and got ready every morning because it was practically the only time we saw each other. I sat on the toilet because there was no other place to lounge but I would've loved a nicer chair.

Oddly enough, over the course of the eight year relationship the "bathroom time" we spent together holds a special place in my heart.

I love the idea but in my bathroom it would always be covered with clothes and, if a male lived there, wet towels. Maybe something not upholstered would be the best choice.

And can I just die over that floor for a minute?

Seems pretty personal to me...say you' a guest and this upholstered chair shows up in the bathroom...would you sit right on it or would you think twice?

Hmm, might be awkward, but I'm surprisingly drawn to the idea!

If you have small children who need to be supervised in the tub, a comfy chair is a great convenience.

cover it in indoor/outdoor fabric and I'm sold. I love a long bath and spent the past several months recovering from a minor surgery which actually requires several baths a day. Often, Husband and I have the best talks when I'm sitting in the bath and he's in the room with me. No tv or phone or interwebs is a very conducive environment for conversation.

I think a bench is more practical (in a more moisture-proof material). It can be used as seating; a place to set clean clothes for after you get out of the shower, etc.

And Alitris, let's not push stereotypes -- I'm a guy, and I pick up after myself. Wet towels go on the towel rod.

yes to a comfie chair, but if the toilet is in the same room i want it slipcovered so it can be cleaned frequently.

All I can see is mold and mildew.

But I would love to love it, because I would totally sit on it and would be drawn to sharing that time with my special someone.

Plus it would be nice while waiting for the tub to fill, or painting my toenails... or a million things!

I think a nice wooden bench could be useful, but in terms of a chair I think it's both unnecessary and unsanitary.

Yeah, that doesn't seem clean to me either. I'm all for wooden furniture though.

I absolutely love that bathroom. I'd love to have my honey read to me from that chair while I took a hot bubble bath.

I have a very large bathroom (could easily be a small bedroom) with a large old fashioned skylight and a claw-foot tub. I have a chronic pain condition and taking a hot bath helps soothe me sometimes so I spend a lot of time in there (sometimes three baths in one day).

When I bought my couch it came with a large ottoman. I stuck it in the bathroom and it's been great. If the hot water's made me lightheaded I can have a comfortable spot to recover and also a more comfortable spot to dry off. My cat also loves to sit on it to keep me company while I bathe.

My dream has always been to have a bathroom large enough to hold a chaise lounge with a white terry cloth slip cover. The bathroom is my FAVORITE room... even though ours is teeeeny tiny.

i think if you have a window and/or exhaust fan in a large bathroom, then upholstery should be fine. Take the chair out into the sunlight every so often, vacuum it - it's not like you're peeing on the thing.

A chair by all means if there is room but not that one.

The bathroom itself is beautiful. And if the bathroom is large enough I'd probably do something similar using a slip covered chair. I think as stated above that at least it can be washed frequently.
