Moxy Crochet: Unique Pieces from South African Artists
Moxy Crochet is an amazing group of seven crocheters from Cape Town, South Africa that are creating these amazing throws and pillows.
The group gathers twice a week to exchange materials and catch up. Each crocheter creates unique hexagonal pieces, and Laura Summs pieces them together. This work structure allows the artists to work from home and spend time with their families. Laura collects the work, assembles it into one-of-a-kind pieces, and makes them available through their website.
The final pieces are absolutely stunning. The locally dyed cotton, bamboo, wool and mohair yarns come in gorgeous jewel tones and subtle neutrals. Our favorites are the bold teals and purples in staccato bursts of color in the large throws. We love that each one is completely handmade and unique. Perhaps it's time to add one to our home...

These are really gorgeous. I often spy handmade crocheted items in thrift stores, but I've found that the color palette makes all the difference between a cosy, inviting afghan and something that looks like a mutant from the 1970s. Of course, good quality wool yarn is a must, too.
Definitely inspires me to pick up my crochet hooks. I've been meaning to try the Babette blanket that jppedi linked to, but I may have to hunt down something a bit more similar to these.

For what it's worth, the Babette blanket uses a yarn that's very expensive for merino wool, albeit cuddly and silky. Making it will not be much cheaper than buying the blanket sold on the Garnet Hill site. I think the Garnet Hill afghan is a lot more attractive.
Check out a book of crochet motifs called "Beyond the Square" for instructions on a ton of different motifs that you can connect into the afghan of your choice. If you want 100% wool, Paton's Classic Merino is an inexpensive choice; KnitPicks also sells inexpensive yarn, including "blanks" that you can hand-dye if you want to, for a look closer to the yarn used in the Babette blanket.
