The Quilts of Gee's Bend

gees7-20.jpgSomeday... maybe we'll actually own one of the quilts of Gee's Bend. (Did you know you can actually buy them?) After all, quilts are made to be used. On a bed, or because of our furry pets, hung on the wall as art.

In the meantime, at long last, The Quilts of Gee's Bend are in San Francisco.

The exhibition has been to 12 venues over the past three years. SF is the final stop, and the only one on the West Coast. We've been looking forward to seeing this exhibition of over 60 quilts made by four generations of African-American women in Alabama. We've admired the quilts' geometric shapes and contrasting colors ever since we first saw them on paper.

At the de Young from July 15-December 31.

The Haines Gallery also has an exhibit of Gee's Bend Quilts (June 22-August 26).

Update 02/07: The demand must have gotten to be too much, because quilts are no longer available on the website.

I saw this show in NYC
LOVED IT, esp the quilts made of old jeans and flour sacks.
It's interesting to see what fabrics became available over the years, including a jaunt into couduroy and 70s patterened synthetics...

The book does not do the colors and patterns and mad mad skills justice. See this show!!!

I agree, Guido, the show is truly, truly breathtaking and you MUST see it in person.

I bought the book for my mom's birthday, and i had to go back and get a copy for me. My grandmom and great-grand were in the same boat as a lot of these ladies and were also quilters, some beautiful for putting out for guests and sick visits, others just for everyday use, and i cherish all the ones i have left.
