Color a Room With Fabric Panels

0923_fabric01.jpg

This room foregoes artwork all together in favor of walls covered entirely in fabric. The vibrant blue hue is just about the color of evening light, making this feel like a relaxing retreat at day's end...

What do you think? Is this a good way to add color to a room without painting the walls? Perhaps a way to designate a sleeping area in an open studio or loft?

Here's a completely different Shaker-style take on fabric-covered walls from Maxwell's recent post: Amazing Wall Curtains: Shaker Design for Drafts

It's visually stunning and looks cozy and nestlike, however, it's impractical for the average person. All of that fabric collects dust, lots of it. Unless you have some sort of setup where you can take it all down and wash it every few weeks or so (and really, who wants to do that?), what's going to happen is that your warm haven is going to become a musty sneezefest in short order.

Wow, gorgeous image! This seems like the polar opposite, but conceptually similar, version of that Shaker idea from the other day, of hanging cloths on pegs to reduce drafts during the winter.

Curtain-clad walls were all the rage in the 1980s, but with stiffer material.
This is really nice, but I agree with Keira about the dust issue.

like others, my first thought is the nightmare of dustiness.

If you put a bit of thought in, I bet it wouldn't be too awful to do that. Shower rods or something all across the top, and then just pull them off, wash them, put them back on again. A ladder'd be needed, but I think it'd be feasible. Not for the whole house, though.

Is this Mrs. Slocombe's bedroom?

Seems to me that this would be stifling in real life- like being cocooned. I'm not sure how I'd feel about being smothered by my own bedroom (especially if it was dusty).

Sure is a lovely image though.

Kinda cool... I imagine it would be pretty expensive.

I;ve just gotten an old mosquito net canopy back from my parent's house. It's almot the same colour I painted my bed - a bit lighter than pictured. I am pretty consistent it seems!

There's a fait bit of light in my room some nights, and I just like the idea of being cosied inside the drapery. I'm going to hang it this weekend, I hope it works out!

I hate fabric on walls and canopies! Besides the dust, it always reminds me of circuis tents. I'd rather have stark white walls with colorful paintings. Paintings are easier to change and can be rotated around the various rooms of the house.

How expensive would that be versus a couple of gallons of paint? And I'm a bit apprehensive about covering one wall in fabric to hide a closet system. I would probably feel claustrophobic in that space.

I've done this in my studio apartment. There is a built in loft but I can't stand sleeping up there (bump goes the head in the night) so it is used for storage. I put my bed underneath, hung a vintage curtain to one side, and attached magenta saris to the underside of the loft and the back wall. I LOVE IT!!! It doesn't get dusty at all and there are little curtain cleaners/hand held vacs one can buy if they do. Its very cozy and nice!

I call it my sleeping spot. :~)

I think it looks very soft and relaxing but I agree with everyone else on the dust issue. Especially since I have allergies and a cat, having a bedroom like that is just begging me to spend my time sneezing and coughing while attempting to vaccuum that fabric with blurry, tear-filled eyes.

though I usually roll my eyes at those who complain about potential dust at every turn... this seems like it would definitely create a problem and the room would end up smelling musty (and what a pain to take them down to wash/dry clean). pretty, though.

This is gorgeous! How about a DIY on how to do it??

Yes. a DIY please! I always envisioned something like this for me room (can't paint, it's a rental), but I ended up thumbtacking some saris to the ceiling instead.
