apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Jessica's Sunny Attic Loft

loft 20.jpgLast fall we got to take a peek into Jessica's 200 square foot studio to see how she managed to live in such tight quarters. Now, she's moved into a loft bedroom in a three bedroom home, and has a chance to spread out a bit. At least horizontally...

loft 07.jpgWhile she now has to contend with a definite vertical challenge, her space has opened up immensely. In a sunny attic loft, complete with two skylights and a beautiful view of the garden treetops, her furniture has a chance to breathe. A fresh coat of bright white paint and simple white curtains masking the closet (seen on Apartment Therapy here) keeps this space feeling open and cheerful. Luckily, none of her furniture was over four feet tall, so the limited height didn't prevent her from bringing any pieces in. Because of the limited overhead space, she opted to keep her artwork on the floor, drawing the eye down and creating the illusion of more space above. By utilizing the floor space and stacking books instead of shelving them, she continues a low visual line of interest that helps to prevent the ceilings from feeling as low as they might.

Check out this interesting transition from a tiny studio into a low attic loft!

Very lovely space, but as someone who ias 6 feet tall, I get anxious just thinking about being in such a tiny room!

Sweet! We've got an attic loft space and I use it as my office / lounge/ retreat and sometimes master bedroom. It feels like a treehouse as the huge trees are outside our windows. Does Jessica have a view?

I love her style, especially the punches of colour (especially teal and orange), but the space itself caused a flare-up of my claustrophobia, and I live in an RV! I definitely could not live in a space where I couldn't stand tall.

I think her space is adorable. But I wonder if she could move the lamp table behind the headboard instead of to the side? The slanting roof was simply charming until I saw that poor crowded orange lamp, which made the entirety of my below-average-height self cringe! Just a tiny suggestion humbly offered.

Have you thought of painting the hallway white to give a feeling or more space?

Also wouldn't you have more space if you have the bed in a perpendicular position?? I know it is very difficult to arrange the furniture with sloppy ceilings, and although I love them they also make me feel claustrophobic in a small space...
I love your pieces of furniture

I live on the 2nd floor of a double, and I use the attic as my bedroom. The walls are exactly the same. It's actually quite big . . . I'm just trying to figure out how to decorate with those crazy slanted walls. Oy!
