Look!: Jeremy's Handmade Platform Bed

6-4-platform4.jpgPortlander Jeremy recently wrote to us:
Hey there, just finished building my new platform bed. My objective (other than looking cool) was something easily portable as we're moving across country in 2 months. So, this bed breaks down into individual boards. The side pieces are solid oak bought from Home Depot, and the rest is 2x4" and pine. Bonus is that it cost $180 in materials...

6-4-platform5.jpg...I still will be making a headboard and matching wall-mounted side shelves.

6-4-platform1.jpgI'll update you when it's complete...

When we emailed Jeremy to say his timing was perfect because we're actually thinking about making a platform bed ourselves (we've asked for instructions), he wrote:

6-4-platform2.jpgWe slept on it last night and it felt like a bed frame should feel = solid.

6-4-platform3.jpgAssembly is pretty easy, took about 20 mins to assemble once it was all built.

My side shelves will look a lot like these from AT, btw--I actually this idea before I saw your post about them. But they will match the bed and the headboard in wood and color.

My previous platform bed I made from the directions in ReadyMade Modern. That bed is bulky, heavy (easily 200lbs) and made from plywood. Because we may be moving to a 3rd story apartment in Boston that lacks an elevator, I needed a bed that could be broken down into its individual components, which this one does nicely.

I may even make long cloth bags for the side boards so that they don't get damaged/ scratched from the move.

Thanks, Jeremy!

Would you share the plans so that it can be duplicated? The plans to the bed you made and didn't like aren't so useful. :-)

I made a platform bed using two doors, and built a frame below. Small wood strip underneath prevent the doors from moving, but keep the option to move the bed with very little effort. I had no problem sleeping on it...just watch the edges in the dark!

thanks folks. Yeah it came out exactly as I was hoping it would. I will be making/finishing the headboard this weekend. I've also began drawing up the plans for anyone to copy.

Its about the same price as an IKEA Malm, but better quality wood, more portable and we will probably keep it longer just because I made it myself.

again thanks to AT and the kind comments. The bedding is from Target (i think).
