SF Good Questions: Cotton, Wool and Coconut Coir Fibre Mattress?

5-9-mattress.jpgAT:SF, I fell in love with this great mattress back in Finland. It's made out of cotton, wool and coconut coir fibre. It's both soft and firm. I have tried to find something similar from San Francisco, but haven't been successful so far...

...All the ones I've found have had latex in them, which I don't want, natural latex or not.

This one from a Finnish shop has 3cm of coconut coir, 8 layers of cotton and the top layer is lambs wool. It says on the page that the mattresses are handmade in Poland. I have asked the shop of the manufacturer's name, but so far have not got an answer.

Any ideas where to get one like this? Or any experiences custom-ordering one?

-Lilli

Lilli,

Honestly, we'd never heard of mattresses with coconut coir fibre in them until we received your question. Our research didn't turn up any for sale in the U.S. -- but perhaps one of our readers will prove us wrong...

You seem to have a very, very specific desire here, and it seems like such a thing isn't readily available. Perhaps if you still have friends in finland, you can have them ship one to you internationally?

Another thought - if you can source/purchase the coconut coir fiber yourself, there are several custom futon makers in town - they might be willing to assemble it for you custom. The cotton and wool are common futon components - it's only the coconut fiber that is not.

I know that there is a company based in England that ships kid's mattresses similar to this to the US, but they don't do adult mattresses...

http://www.naturalmat.com/

Coir and lambswool is used a lot in custom mattresses in the UK, maybe there is a custom place in San Francisco that could do it.

Actually, the picture above looks like a futon...

Actaully, I emailed the owner of the Futon Bed Shop back in Finland, and he promised to get one delivered here. But it just seems silly to me, that I couldn't find something similar/better from here... it's such a big city after all.
I also found the website for the kid's mattresses. But they only did them in children's sizes, maximum size was a regular single bed.

Any ideas where to buy a regular futon mattress (just cotton) from SF? Or any suggestions on custom mattress makers?
Thanks for the comments! The picture DOES look like a cake! (That's the small sample piece of a mattress in the pic)

Have you checked Earthsake, in Berkeley?
My friend got her mattress there a couple of years ago and she raves about it:

Hehe, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that looks like some sort of dessert.

Ended up getting a locally made product: a wool cotton bit of latex in between -kinda mattress from The Futon Shop on Cesar Chavez. Very inexpensive too. And we could've gotten one right away, but we opted for delivery next week (we don't have a car).

Thanks for help, I'll propably end up buying some towels from Earthsake!
