Best Products: Duralex Picardie Glasses

2picardie8-7.jpgDuralex Picardie glasses are one of those adored design classics.

Newyorkette says: "The Duralex tumbler is as magical as a mundane object can get." A web designer, Patrick Taylor, has a separate page devoted to them on his website (and he sells the glasses here).

First made by Duralex almost 80 years ago, Picardie glasses are classic French bistro glasses. They were also used in the dining halls of British schools for many years. They're simple, durable, versatile. They're stackable, comfortable to hold, and the perfect weight. And, amazingly, they're inexpensive.

We bought our vintage glasses at the Alameda Flea last year, but you can get the modern versions at Williams-Sonoma or Crate & Barrel.

A few days ago we ate at a new little French bistro in our neighborhood. It seemed perfect that our French cider was served in a Picardie glass.

I grew up in Manila and my grandmother had a set of duralex glasses. I remember the TV commercials for these glasses that touted its strength - a picardie being dropped and not shattering - so I didn't understand why we children had to be sitting down to be able to drink from these glasses. My first drink of coffee (at age five, Nescafe instant and lots of milk) was served in a picardie. When I was allowed to wash the dishes, I'd intentionally drop one just to check if indeed the glass won't break (it didn't). Later, when Tupperware were introduced, we switched to plastic - they were imported from America and were more expensive than the glasses!
