Low-maintenance gardens don't just save time and energy, but precious water resources as well. When Lisa Russo and Jason Collins undertook renovating their 1926 craftsman bungalow, they made a low-maintenance garden a priority — over the bathroom and kitchen.

Their plan included diverting rainwater into the garden and removing all lawn. Read more about the couple's design and sustainability strategies here.

Could anyone recommend some books on low maintenance gardening and xeriscaping?

We ripped out our lawn the summer after we moved into our house. The thought of watering and mowing it was just too much. I would never go back. We replaced it with gravel where we have seating and several square foot beds.

Merry, you might want to check with your local water company to see if they have any resources for xeriscaping. Mine has a nice program that gives you coupons and resources for the best plants for the area.
