Blogging Diablo Magazine: Stylish Living in Lafayette

Good style does indeed exist in the suburbs. The current issue of Diablo — which covers the East Bay — includes a feature on the Lafayette home of Joanna Dawson. She co-owns Walnut Creek boutique Hush, which is also opening a San Francisco location any day now.

Writer Tracey Taylor describes Dawson's eclectic decor: "Her ability to mix and match styles becomes clear as we stroll by a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona daybed in the living area and a Herman Miller Noguchi coffee table and Charles Eames lounge chair in the TV room. These icons of sleek, functional design coexist with funkier pieces: the cherished old library desk in her study; a 1940s-style cabinet in her 12-year-old son’s bedroom, bought at a garage sale for $40; and a pair of beatnik Moroccan patchwork poufs in the master suite."

While pairing together iconic pieces can sometimes make a space feel like a showroom, Dawson adds warmth with large, personal photos.

The bedroom and chair shown above reflect a softer, slightly feminine look — more Anthropologie than DWR, more B&B than hip hotel. We would so love to hang out in that bedroom; it strikes us as a lovely retreat.

Dawson says her home "defines what I am comfortable with." And regardless of where you live or what size your home, we think that's what matters most.

Let me guess. This is "good design" because of the obligatiory and predictable Eames lounger and Noguchi table?

Looks more like uninspired, unoriginal, cookie cutter design.

At least it's tastefully done.

I do like the tufted sofa she's sitting on.

To me, good design is not just about having the iconic pieces in a room's decor, but rather, how one plays up the various pieces in one setting and I will agree that's been achieved here but I will agree with boomer that she could be more bold in her color choices as there is too much white or variations of tan/beige going on and what colors she has is either not enough or simply doesn't have any real punch to it.

If anything, she goes a tad too safe but she's definately on the right track I think. Even if she didn't have that iconinc Eames chair and Noguchi table, what she's done is in good taste, but again, a tad bland.

JEZ .... Boomer and Ciddyguy .... the scions of taste ... I don't think so.

Boomer, the "tufted sofa" she is sitting on is a Chesterfield ... DING.

Ciddybuy ... I did not realize the post was asking for your crit ... but if you are going to crit, please do it the right way. A crit is not about your personal style but the piece being critiqued ... GOT IT?

I think her place is extremely nice & she appears to have put a lot of effort into making it so. If I was in her place I'd be smiling too (well I already am but that's another story).

Boomer you're predictably irascible & sour grapes whenever you post on here, you never seem to have anything positive to say which is unfortunate. Why is this so?

I always enjoy reading Patrick the Other One's posts as he seems pretty objective & more often than not is able to offer sophisticated opinions.

Duncan, I post a lot of positive things. Why don't *you* refrain from personal attacks?

Boomer, every post I've read of yours you rain on other people's parade a lot.
You're not being 'attacked' just questioning why you spew so much negativity, so frequently.
Let's take a long hard look inside your place with pictures (unless you've already done so.......), or better yet invite us over & we'll bring pen & notepad so we can take notes.

Duncan- It's no use. Boomer seems to be completely committed to spending an inordinate amount of time criticizing, critiquing and basically "raining on people's parades" because it seems to be his modus operandi. There's been many calls out for him to just leave it be, but he never does. He desires agreement, but only agreement with his own personal tastes and world view. He feels free to throw around descriptives such as "uninspired, unoriginal, cookie cutter design" all the while crying about "personal attacks". He spouts off a litany of political tangents, regularly claims better resources than the ones posted under the guise of helpful input. I believe the term for such a person is called a "one-upper."

My God, it's a catfight between a bunch of bitter old queens. Why don't you go off and start your own blogs instead of trolling about and forcing your ugly personalities on everyone else? You're not "sophisticated" or "clever". Just bitter.
