Todd's Ocean-Inspired Suite

Kim's Tropical Punch Suite
Todd or Kim? On Sunday, HGTV revealed their final projects. San Francisco's own Todd Davis devised a funky "Ocean-Inspired Suite" reworking the layout of the penthouse to take greater advantage of the views. His fellow finalist, Kim Myles, created a "Tropical Punch Suite" that the judges deemed more upscale than Todd's room.
The official HGTV voting ended on Wednesday. Tune in on Sunday to find out who viewers chose as the winner of the competition.

Todd's design has some flaws - lack of contrast regarding the artwork, and the scale of some of the furniture. The ponderous coffee table seems to suck the space out of his room. So does the sofa. Why didn't he go with a couple of chairs, or a bench? Function is also an issue - I wouldn't want to try to walk around in the dark in Todd's room - "ouch"...
The cutout headboard Todd created seems too small in scale to support the form of the bed.
Kim's design, however, demonstrates great proportion and scale. Kim seems to understand proper use of contrasting shades of color (see art above bed), as opposed to Todd's use of the shades of blue in his artwork. There is also an element of minimalism regarding the lack of furniture in Kim's room that complements the stylishness and ornamentation of the art above the bed - there is nothing else competing with it. I also wouldn't have to worry about getting to the bathroom in one piece in her room. Function was not overlooked.

I haven't been watching the show, so I'm not aware of Todd or Kim's talents. But if I had to try and sleep in either room, I think I'd go nuts. The colors are really bright! I really don't like the looks of either. Sorry!

Whenever I can, usually at my Mom's, I've been seeing the later parts of this program and found Kim to be my fav as well for a lot of reasons.
While Todd is great at thinking outside the box, he does so at the expense of practical design sometimes (as clearly demonstrated here). While the rotating platform is great, it did nothing to the style of the room and I think even the judges had to agree, it didn't really add to the room much despite being a great idea in concept.
In the pictures above, I do have to agree that while I liked Todd's more modern approach, the scale is just not right as someone else here already noted for some things like the headboard and the bedside lamps, both too small for the space and the furniture placed within the space.
And I do agree that there is not enough contrast in his color scheme as well.
Kim's room does come across as more polished and thus more sophisticated than Todd's and I liked how she used color to add punch to the room while avoiding a cutsey feminine look. I am a firm believer that if the room is to be shared by both sexes, then the room should be gender neutral, more or less and not be overly frilly as most men do not go for that type of look. Also, she did well with her scale too, the lamps and headboard serve to well define the bed, as they should without overwhelming the room by themselves, they also stand out against the green walls to add texture and detail to the room itself. What I like is her tastes tend to run more on the classic but modern look without being stuck to a specific era.
I have a hunch she may well be the winner.

Both designs have their flaws.
Todd's scale is off in the coffeeboard, lamp, headboard and mirror. I suspect the art on the wall would look better in person than on camera, where you will be able to appreciate the subtles. I don't find it very sophisticated, but I didn't see the episode so I don't know the client brief. The picture (I think) on the left of the bed seems to disappear. I'm also distracted by the light cover and the discongruently formal pelmet on the drapes.
Kim's choice of color I found predictable and trite. Her choices of color in the bedding also seem off, with a jumbled mix of saturations, hues and contrasts that don't quite seem to work. You can see the attempts to repeat the elements in other part of the room, but things are just ever so off... (like the bright white of the pillowcases and in what appear to be panels on the left... fighting with the offwhite of the throw and the beige in the wall and duvet... ). The cord along the wall is a big no-no.

I got rid of my TV 6 years ago.
I no longer am influenced by bad design as much.
I used to wonder if they did it on purpose to stimulate controversy.
Todd's room is clearly the worst of the two.
My pet peeve with it is that huge mirror mounted way up the wall behind the bed.
What's with that?
...makes me think some chef will be performing a cooking show here at any moment.

I watched the whole season... it has been the only thing on tv on Sunday nights where wives aren't sleeping with their best friends husbands.
I think both designers have had their flaws throughout the season, and I can honestly see them both having their own show quite successfully.
Because lets face it, anything has to be better hosted than Vern's new show. I got as much out of that design wise as I do staring at my sink for a half hour.

Am I the only one here who thought that the general level of talent this season was down from last season? I actually liked most of the stuff David did in Season 1, but this season nobody really blew me away like that.
The finals of Season 2 cemented that feeling, because I just wasn't moved by either room.

Ugh. So tired of the interweb negativity....
I personally loved this show for what it was, and very much enjoyed seeing the competitors flex their creative muscles (and in turn, got my design wheels a'turnin).
Kim was my favorite from the beginning, and I was so happy she really pulled it out in the end.

i haven't seen the show, but kim's is the lesser of 2 evils.
the other one has a mirror over the bed weak bubbles.
the couch in front of the bed is too much furniture.
