Blogging &Home: The Writer's House

Japanese home magazines offer so much in the way of eye candy that we don't even know where to start. The December issue (Vol. 15) of &Home profiles the homes of three women, and it's the third, the home of a writer, that caught our attention.

Since our Japanese is rather rusty (ahem), there's not much more we can tell you about her, except that she has a kick-ass home, and must be rather successful, judging by our understanding of the space-to-yen ratio in Japan.

It looks so warm, woody and inviting -- we bet it smells wonderful too.

I think the vertical bit of large white text translates to something like, 'Self expression is very important to me. Even in the items I rely on in my daily life, those that show the hand of the craftsman or creator are my most favorite.' She definitely has some beautiful antique pieces of Japanese furniture.

Her name is Kazue ODAIRA and she champions a way of decorating that she calls "Junk Style." My guess is that Junk Style means not only taking pieces from the street because of economy, but taking these pieces because they often have a weathered worn down look that can be very appealing. (Wabi sabi, mono-no-aware and yada yada yada and all that jazz.) She looks so young but she is 43 and has a husband and two kids--12 and 8 years old. She lives in Shimokitazawa, sort of the Greenwich Village of Tokyo which is known for edgy performance spaces. yet she also publishes a lot in the NYT of Japan, the Asahi newspaper. She might be Japan's own Apaato Seraapi Sensei. . Here is her website. It's a fun place to poke around.
