The Fremont Lofts are touted as prime specimens of community-building design, and January's issue of Seattle Metropolitan profiles the designers and residents of the project.

At 4 stories and 2,000 square feet each, the units invite creativity in how to use the space. The third floor is a loft over the main floor (the first floor is below ground), and each resident uses theirs in a different way: one turned theirs into a formal dining area, and another couple used theirs for work-slash-TV space.

And no urban loft would be complete without a rooftop deck. This one overlooks the complex and the narrow, winding roads between the buildings, inspired by the density of French and Italian urban neighborhoods.
