Caring for Plants While on Vacation
Real Simple

6-3-08 watering plants.jpgWe'll preface this by saying that all tips in this article also work for those who, ahem, aren't necessarily on vacation, but need a little help remembering to water the plants, just the same.

Though there are many, many self-watering pots out there, we like the simplicity of the shoestring method described in the article, and we think we might want to try it, substituting the lace for a similarly absorbent but more attractive piece of string. It would be great if you're in a pinch, because who doesn't have a shoelace hanging around somewhere? Let us know if you have any other tips for caring for plants when out of town.

i water plenty for a week prior and set them on the sill. they always show distinct growth when i'm away, never when i'm home.

If I'm gone a long time, I'll put them in the tub or sink (on top a rubber bath mat) with a few inches of water. Works great.

Or just water them heavily before I go; leaving a few inches of water in the saucer underneath the pot. Never had any die on me yet.

If you're not at home to look at it, why would you need the string to be "attractive"?

I have used the string trick many times... I have however underestimated the amount of water needed. Usually using a Ball Canning Jar full of water.... if it get's hot enough, they can need more... just food (or water?) for thought!
