You may have noticed that homes with lots of light and windows and white paint get us every time. Which makes it interesting that we were so taken with this Seattle house full of walnut, blackened steel, and concrete. But there's something very warm and soothing about the calm color palette, the simplicity of lines, the spare furnishings, the black and white photographs. It doesn't look like any other home on Queen Anne that we've ever seen.

What a beautiful place. I love the broken urn on the kitchen counter, and those great dining chairs, and the minimalist front door.
But the room in the first photo is awful.
To understand what's wrong with it, imagine you're reclining on the cushions in the corner of the couch. Now imagine trying to walk, gracefully, from there to the rug.

I was blown away by this interior when I flicked through the magazine straight from my mail box. The textures, the colors, the shapes...it's definately sexy!

(Oops, was in the middle of switching around photos when Blandwagon must have been writing that comment. Now it's the second photo.)

It has a Zen quality to it. I like most everything I've seen, even the art choices are nice - love the moth.

I can relate to this interior. Personally, I have an aversion for white wall house. I lived in one as a child. Maybe it is because I live in a cold climate, but I find that a white house feels really cold. I prefer the warm, natural tones. Or a space filled with muted colors.
The bathroom is amazing. So peaceful! And the kitchen where your guests can sit down on a bench near you while you are making dinner is my ultimate entertaining dream.

I love the architecture but the interior design leaves something to be desired. The furniture looks bulky and dated.

The choice of that muted yellow for the sofa just makes me want to cry. It is so perfect for that room---and the tears because I would never, ever, ever have thought of it.
---sigh---

i don't like it at all. who takes themselves seriously enough to be able to live there? it looks dated and uninspired. another case of an architect who spends too much time admiring other architects.

I think it's absolutely gorgeous. The only "issue" i have is the art - everything is incredibly beautiful but the art seems a little too impersonal. The pic of the horses is corny at best, and the buddha pic, while I respect Buddha, I feel the picture is a little "trying too hard"... But that's just me. That door leading to the outside pool? The fireplace logs as wall texture? Gimme more! LOVE it.

It's very serene, but for some reason, there is an air of loneliness and despair about this place. It uses very warm colors and materials, but it just comes across as a bit cold. It's not a happy home at all.

does anyone know where to find the horses photo?

I am in love with this house. It just exudes calm to me. I'd never want to leave. And the sunken tub is incredible.
I'd have to disagree about the horse photo - I found it incredibly striking and when you read the article it mentions he had spent time on farms, so to me, that seems personal. Plus the scale of it with the horse looking out at you - incredible.

Love it!! The wooden ceiling just gives this house a natural glow that is just gorgeous, and so inviting!

While I can appreciate the design, this house is in the wrong climate! It is too cold looking for Seattle ... don't let the light in these photos fool you ... very seldom is it that bright here.
