BoConcept Store Opens
San Francisco

8-8-08 boconcept ext.jpgWhen we first got the invitation to attend BoConcept's latest store opening in the Embarcadero, we admit we knew very little about the brand. Based on the image in the invite, we figured it was a very high-end furniture studio with lots of beautiful stuff we can't afford...

8-8-08 boconcept couch.jpgSo imagine our delight when we arrived to find that yes, there was some beautiful stuff, but the prices were quite reasonable. Our favorite piece was the multi sphere pendant lamp, but we also liked the look of their sofas and accessories, which offered something a bit sleeker than the standard chain brand fair (the company's European roots are apparent in a lot of the design).

BoConcept is now open at 101 Townsend Street.

oh? any details? or do you just enjoy typing in all caps?

I'm curious what people think of them. I popped in the Cambridge store just before they were closing one evening and they gave me a catalog before ushering me out ('cause god forbid if they should stay open 2 minutes late). I saw maybe one item that I actually liked from the catalog.

Ultra-sleek, glossy black, glossy white, monotone fabrics... *yawn*

A few interesting designs, but nothing to warrant a visit, IMB.

I've been in the Houston, TX BoConcept. I'd say they are overpriced for the quality of furniture they provide. I saw some things that I liked. But on closer inspection, a lot of the veneer on their products is comparable to IKEA quality, and in some cases, even worse than IKEA quality, yet they charge more than 2-3x the price.

Absolutely horrible customer service. Once they get your money they won't have anything to do with you again.

people, stop thinking in little boxes.

there is, for instance, no such thing as "Ikea quality". Ikea does have cheap stuff and less cheap stuff, and the quality varies accordingly.

of course you can deliver more durability and more overall quality when you get more money for it in return. really cheap furniture rarely can do that.

i am buying Ikea because i like a lot of their design, and i wouldn't be able to pay more. if you have the money, take it elsewhere without dissing those who cannot.

sorry for the rant :-D

I beg to differ.

There is such a thing as "ikea quality".

I love ikea but everyone knows it's cheap and a temporary solution to what you'd normally want.

we as consumers will always compare flatpak furniture to ikea because it has set a standard in the industry for more affordable furniture.

you would have to be a fool to spend $2000 on a table that people compare to "ikea quality" at boconcept, considering all of the options available today.

boconcept is better quality than ikea, but not by much. it's definitely not justifiable when you compare prices, however.

besides, the service is by far the worst i have ever experienced in my whole life.

P.S sorry you are poor. can I buy you a soda?

I have had some good experiences at the BoConcept in Scottsdale. They are a little overpriced but I have never had an issue with the quality. I have a sofa from BoConcept and have been very happy with it but their casegoods do seem a little suspect.

There is that line between design and Euro masses, sleek furniture. I think BoConcepts looks like what one would call mass produced Contemporary European Furniture, which really is not a style . It also reminds me of when Copenhagen Furniture first opened and the masses thought that was Contemporary Danish or Scandinavian Designs the masses thought that was Scandinavian design and thought both were too modern.

I am sure with a good eye there might be one or things that are good blenders. Some of the pieces start off looking good, but then they added a funky leg or something that then gives it that cheesy look rather than good design, their armchairs are a good example of this. Some of their sofas are not bad.

I'm looking for a super comfy white/cream sofa for my small garden apartment in San Francisco. I haven't been to the store yet but I'm interested in their "Indivi 2" pieces. I like the idea of a 2 1/2 seater with the "resting unit". I really wanted a chaise (something to put my legs up on) but the ones at Pottery Barn are too big for my space.

I'd pretty much just decided on a PB Square sofa with an ottoman. Now, I'm wondering if a piece from Bo Concept would work better but I'm concerned about some of the comments about quality of goods and service. Any advice for me? I'd like to keep it under or around 2k. Thanks!

P.S. Also checking out their small tv units but I found another online site that has one that swivels for about the same price and good reviews. I think it's BDI.

Just to balance out the negative views out there..
I bought a bed and two night stands at BoConcept because I liked the style and yes after reading the comments online held my breath until if was delivered. I realized I was taking a chance but was willing to do it. My experience has been extremely positive. No problems. The delivery guys were on time, put it together quickly, answered a few of our questions. The sales person in the store was also nice and very patient with me.

I know it is frequently compared to IKEA, however, I just don't see it. I think the quality of IKEA furniture is much lower and I don't like the styles. It screems dorm room to me. I think BoConcept is a good option for your first " grown up" furniture.

(No I don't work for BoConcept and my experience has been with the Cambridge, MA store.)
