Yarn Bombers' Knit Graffiti

0316_yarn.jpg

These two Vancouver knitters, Mandy Moore and Leanne Prain, are up to making their mark on their city. Much like your typical graffiti, the two speak of "tagging" signs, poles and trees in their urban surroundings. But they're tagging with knit graffiti, not paint. Above, a street light cozy in front of the capitol building. A couple more of our favorite finds from their blog after the jump...

Funny! (But potentially icky after some bad weather and pollution... I'm thinking of the snow at the roadsides late in winter...)

Sherry, it is BC. No snow or pollution. :P

I feel so much better knowing that those street signs and lamp posts have been staying warm this winter...

I registered just to comment on this post, just to be annoying and technical. The top photo is of the inner harbour of Victoria, BC, not Vancouver.

gotta defend my city :)

I read a story last year about knittaplease and tagged my house. Coming up to the front door was an ugly metal handrail that I tagged, and then on the back deck was a ghastly (yet handy) PVC pipe handrail that I was two seconds from taking down. Now that they both have cute knits on them, they look cute! Also, I kinda figured that I would have to replace them at least in a few months, but it has been about a year (in Minneapolis with rain and snow and probably some pollution) and they still look great. Those knittaplease girls rock...I wish I were that brave.

their time and effort would have been better knitting a scarf or hat for someone in need or to have handed out in the local shelter.

Aww, I used to live in the neighbourhood Laurie Marsden "cosied" some signs in - I love the idea of guerilla knitting.

Oh this is Victoria!! What a beautiful city!!
Fernwood, Fairfield, Quadra Villlage, James Bay... she "knit hits" neighbourhoods all over! What fun!

Wow, sure can tell who sees the glass as half full here... yikes! Peace & Joy y'all! (:

VICTORIA!! The Vancouver Island Capital City of beautiful BC!!
Most beautiful city ever!!
What a whimsical idea.
Love those who have fun with life... bring it on!

Yes, Victoria. I live here. And it is the best place!
I have seen these guerilla knit"where" in the summer months downtown and in surrounding neighbourhoods.
There is no pollution or smog in Victoria, so these acts of art work perfectly here! ha! ;-p

I've seen this blogged about in several places. I love the idea of this, but I do have an issue with some of the safety aspects. The street sign cozy loses all reflective quality, making it difficult to see at night, and the crosswalk buzzer poses potential problems for vision-impaired pedestrians.

Gorgeous cozies! I've been planning to make some for my neighbourhood. Thanks for covering awesome craftiness AT.

Seaside - as a knitter, if you knit, you knit for who and what you want. Knitting is only worth doing if you will have fun.

If signpost cozies is what gets these knitters excited, so be it. Not everyone finds hats and scarves fun to knit, I would rather make a cash donation than knit acrylic scarves for the homeless.

The idea of outlaw knitters -- they knit by night! -- tickles me to no end.

ibislynn: the guerrilla knitting happens in obsure places, off the beaten track. In Victoria (where the images are taken -- not Vancouver!! Pleasssse...), her knits cover side street signs in neighbourhoods like Fernwood/Fairfield (as recognized by 2009sunshine!*)
*Hi Victoria neighbours -- not surprised there are so many local design-loving folks here. Comes with the territory!

Reflective qualities are hardly a concern, nor are the vision-impaired crossings - she doesn't cover the button and the helpful chirp still chirps...! Victoria is a very artsy place, and the designs are fun and meant to be just that. A fun artistic statement. Quite acceptable here! See the bright side of these type of projects, people!!

Double thumbs up.

The idea of Outlaw Knitters is awesome. I'm entertaining the idea of learning to knit just to go 'tag' my neighbors house...

And so what if it is raining in both Vancouver and Victoria this week? If I would rather live in -40 I would go live somewhere that had -40 winters.

Hi guys - the girls behind Yarnbombers are indeed, as stated in this post, living in Vancouver. The images are from: Victoria (top image), Victoria (second image, as stated in the caption), and Vancouver (third image, also as stated in the caption).
