apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Book Storage Solutions
Domino on Automatism

Since many of us collect books and magazines, we are always running into storage problems. Some have the luxury of an actual library at home, but most of us look for simpler solutions. In many homes, bookshelves are often part of a dining room, office, or even a bedroom. We came across a great roundup of book storage ideas from the Domino archives on Automatism. More pictures after the jump...

For the full round up check out the Automatism blog. In our home we built a custom bookshelf that takes advantage of the high ceilings and the vertical space to accommodate all the books. Storing books in a non-working fireplace or in the rafters of your ceiling are other great options. We also like the idea of floating bookshelves. They don't feel as heavy and overwhelming, especially when they fill the entire wall. Where do you store your books? Let us know in the comments below.

I love the uber-tall built-in bookcases.

But books in a fireplace? For me it brings up images of ritualistic bookburnings.

I agree with the other two posters. I WANTED to like the fireplace storage since it's unique....but it ended up not working for me mentally. Sort of like storing toilette paper in a fish tank.

I love the books between the rafters and in the dining room. The fireplace idea bothers me a lot for some reason. How will Santa come down the chimney at Christmas?

I kinda like the books in the fireplace-- they would just need a bit more order for me. I don't like the crammed in look; I'd maybe do it with shelves. We have one of those no-longer-functional fireplaces, but it currently houses our cat's litter box.

Much as I love apartment therapy --- as far as books, well -- they don't seem to get it.

But soon we'll all have kindle and it won't be a problem. Hm. Fireplaces. Kindle -- kindling? Speaking of which, I wish they would invent a small, inexpensive super energy efficient electric fireplace insert that really emitted radiant heat. They could do it. I know they could.

"In many homes, bookshelves are often part of a dining room, office, or even a bedroom."

I feel strongly that books happily belong in all rooms, no "even" about it (although in a kitchen it's better to keep them away from the cooker so they don't get too grease-dusty).

That third picture has me singing "It's raining books!" now ...

I love the last picture... So inviting. it just asks for you to grab a book and sit down! The one in the kitchen looks pretty but scares me a little, I guess I just have a fear of earthquakes though and things tumbling down on my head. Just speaking from experience. Ouch.

Does anyone know what blue paint that is in the first picture, I would love to paint my hallway that color, the grey I have now is boring and blah!

I don't know LoriSF but I would love to know the color also. It seems to be a popular color that keeps showing up on AT a lot lately and I really would love to try it somewhere in my home too! Just a pop of it! If anyone knows...???
