Bottom's Up Doorbell by Droog Design

4-23-08 doorbell.jpgEvery time our buzzer rings we practically jump out of our skin. We'd compare it to playing Operation, minus the little tweezers and any of the fun. Wouldn't it be nice to toast your guest's arrival instead?

That's the thought behind Peter van der Jagt's Bottom's Up Doorbell, from Droog Design. A hammer hits the two glasses, creating a "clinking" ripple between them... which sounds much more appealing to us than a taser-like buzzing sound.

Pick one up at Propeller in Hayes Valley, or online here.

It's really interesting but also really expensive. I don't know if I like seeing the exposed solenoid. It looks home-brew but has a Sharper-Image price.

Have you seen the Jacob Jensen doorbell? There's a USB version if you want to add your own tunes (midi). I bought the standard one since I love the built-in tunes (I use the "oriental bell" tune but the "lounge bell" is awesome too in my opinion). Both models are wireless.

SFMOMA sells the standard one (that's where I got mine). http://sfmoma.stores.yahoo.net/jajedo.html

Their site doesn't have the sounds but the Jacob Jensen site does. http://www.jacobjensen.com/#/int/collection/living/doorbells/doorbell_usb/

How difficult is it to change the apartment door buzzer?

I've done it a few times - it's trivial. If you can change a light switch you can change a doorbell. It's even easier if you're replacing a wired one with a wireless model.

we got this doorbell a few years ago on a trip to Amsterdam. The dollar was worth a lot more back then so it wasn't nearly so expensive as it is now.
I love the way it sounds and people often comment on it.

now & zen, the company that makes those "meditation bell" alarm clocks, also has something that you can rig up to your doorbell.
