apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Camping Series by Jesper K. Thomsen

22709camping1.jpgThis table and chairs, designed by Jesper K. Thomsen for Normann Copenhagen, reminds me of the pool furniture at my grandmother’s apartment building… in a good way. I can almost smell those sunny days from when I was a kid, the chlorine in my hair and the cut grass. I’m fairly sure, however, that these woven leather seats wouldn’t leave the same unsightly red marks on the backs of my legs—or if they did, it would be worth it. I’d endure quite a lot for the clean lines and elegant craftsmanship of these beauties. More from the collection, including the gorgeous daybed, after the jump…

The Camping series is not designed for actual outdoor use; rather, Thomsen has adopted and refined the forms and concepts of camping furniture for indoor living. The idea is to bring inside the sense of freedom and leisure that comes with outdoor recreation.

From a design perspective, Thomsen and Normann Copenhagen are interested in pursuing a New Danish Modern, using traditional methods and Danish materials to produce the landmark modern design that Denmark is known for. The Camping series, made from moulded beech wood and strips of leather, is produced by Kvist, one of Denmark's oldest wooden furniture factories (since 1896).

Wow, it's beautifully constructed, and I'm sure that wood feels like butter. The lounger/bench is lovely, but there's something about curves of the chair and table that say "kid's furniture" to me. Maybe it's the angle of the photo too (makes it look small).

It looks nice and the construction looks nice - but I think most of this would be too small for adults and I have doubts on how long it would actually last if you were really out camping, not just a night out by your neighborhood lake.

He obviously took inspriation from Brown Jordan's Tamaimi furniture. If the construction is similar it will be comfortable.

These look beautiful; I hope they're comfortable. They remind me of this blinged-out concept by Refined Sugar Studio:

But, obviously more on the subtle end of things...

A comment from the producer,

Hi, just a few notes from Normann Copenhagen.

Monroe you are right that the angel of the photo may not be the best. We have a few "real life" pictures on our flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/normann-copenhagen/page4/

ChrisGal the Camping series was inspired by outdoor furniture, but is not made for an outdoor life.

You can find a short interview with the designer on our blog: http://spottedbynormanncopenhagen.com/2009/02/20/camping-anyone/

More info about Camping on our homepage:

Kind regards
