Wouldn't it be possible to make something like this yourself? I I think al you need is a a round mirror with a frame (cheapest frame available is enough) and 2 quality pieced of leather.

Those who think they can reproduce: Go to BDDW and take a look at this mirror (and everything else in the showroom) no way, unless you are an artisan can you replicate. This mirror is a stunner. Every detail is perfection.

OK, let's assume that the BDDW original is finely crafted to stunning perfection as stated. The questions of market positioning and perceived value still remain: do customers who want this mirror want to pay $1200? And do customers who have $1200 to spend on a mirror want this one? It looks to me like something Target could knock off really easily.

I finally found a beautiful circular mirror (similar to this one) at an antique mall for $78.00. It's set on a rich dark wood frame and the mirror has a tapering bevel. The craftsmanship is great and now I love it even more since it cost me $1122.00 dollars less than the BDDW captain's mirror.

i'd rather try to diy my own replica and live with the imperfections.....that is unless i score a niiiiice find like seaside!!!

If I had a trust fund generating about $2M/yr in interest income, I'd probably hire a decorator who shopped at BDDW. But if I could afford $1200 for a 20" mirror (or $1600 for 28"), I certainly wouldn't be doing my own shopping or even know where it came from.

Lucia Nenickova, an artisan working in New York makes a similar mirror to order at her shop in Gramercy. She is lovely and the 14" mirror is $650. I have one of her handbags and a belt - both beautifully crafted. www.lucianenickova.com

this is an update of a jacques adnet mirror, also done in leather (using saddling construction), made in france and sold through hermes and others in the 1950s. i've seen them go for less than a grand at auction, much more through dealers. i don't know if adnet was the originator or copied an even earlier design.

Yes, ok, artisan craftsmanship. I'd like to cash in on some simple yet impressively executed items. The consumer part of me, however, and I believe this is a common mindset, doesn't require stunning details to acquire a look. And when I do hit my fortune, I will make sure to set up everyone here with a nice trust fund. There's a difference between one unnecessary object costing what you think it would be worth, and someone with the means to afford it having the sense not to spend that much on this. There is also the itemized vs. bottom line. If the price doesn't overblow your budget when the rest of your furnishings come in, it doesn't matter how much it costs. It only matters when you can't justify the cost of the single item when you really really want it.

As I've posted elsewhere, I just happened to be looking at The Gardener website and it's on sale for 25% off! $900 either size!

Where (besides BDDW) can I find something like the cast bronze hanging puck that holds up their captain's mirror? I've been looking everywhere for something like it...help please!!
