We have a cat, whose adorable gray fur comes off of her body with not-so-adorable dander and allergens on a very regular basis. We sweep and vacuum, which usually does the trick, but since June is the beginning of the lavender season and the herb is starting to pop up at farmers markets, we thought we'd try this homemade vacuuming powder using it.

I just have to say that (stock?) photo is adorable.

wow. seems like every cat I've ever known has been deathly afraid of vacuum cleaners

That looks exactly like my cat, even the stray whiskers above the eyes.
I'll have to try this. And every cat I know is afraid of vacuum cleaners too.

@EasilyAmused The cat's probably just getting it's revenge while it can. It'll probably be hiding under the bed next time the vacuum is running.

Just a word of warning, cats cannot metabolize ANY essential oils. The oils build up in their liver, and can be fatal.

For a sectional wool or cotton rug, what about just taking it outside, slinging it over a fence or a an outdoor table or chair or two, and washing it with the hose and some shampoo, then sun drying? I just did that with a cat-beloved oriental and I swear it's like having a brand new rug. The dander is GONE GONE GONE, and it only took 1 day to dry.

Essential oils are NOT good for any cat. Please do not advise people to place that into their carpet freshener. It will degrade their livers over time & eventually shorten the lifespan and health of your cat!

Please remove the suggestion of using essential oils- It is toxic & will destroy their livers over time & shorten the lifespan of many pets who are subjected to it.

That cat is adorable!
I have the exception to the rule, a cat that is fascinated with the vacuum and also one who hides under the bed if it is out.

A raw meat diet for your pet will reduce/eliminate dander and you will have a much healthier animal and lower vet bills to boot! Also comb/brush pets daily to reduce hair issues and create a loving bond between owner and pet.

A good way of freshening your carpet without laying down any powder is to take a cotton swab put a few drops of essential oil on it and put it in your vacuum’s dust receptacle ( be it bag or canister). You will get the pleasant odor of the oil without the powder (which gives me the sneezes). I learned this one from “How Clean is Your House” Kim and Aggie are my cleaning guru’s.

cats either hate or love vacuum cleaners. Mine love to vacuumed themselves! go figure... maybe it tickles!

also gotta chime in and say, please remove the essential oils suggestion--- it should not be optional even. they are highly highly toxic to cats!

and this is the 2nd time i have read this on apt therapy, last time during pet month there were tons of comments back then saying essential oils are highly toxic to cats.

That kitty isn't loving the vac hose -- she's attacking it! Being a fearless predator (like my own cats, I recognize the pose) she is obviously trying to eviscerate this strange creature she has captured! (If you doubt that, find a cat, put your hand in a similar position and tickle her tummy. I'll bet she grabs ahold and claws the dickens out of your arm!! Ask me how I know!)
