Most Hated House Chores

5-29-08 dishes1.jpg

See those piles? In our experience, most people would look at those dirty dishes in the back and run the other way. Us? We really don't mind washing up...someone once mentioned that they saw it as a calm, meditative practice and we're inclined to agree. But what really gets our goat are all of the clean dishes. We certainly don't love chores, but we hate putting away clean dishes....

We're a little embarrassed to admit that we've even been known to go on a put-away strike and have let them pile up until there were no more clean dishes in the cupboard....oops. So we wanna know: which chores do you really really really hate?

Scrubbing bathroom tiles. I generally hate cleaning my bathroom but that task I find especially painful.

I actually love putting dishes away and won't start doing the dishes until my dishrack is completely empty. Actually a pet peeve of mine when people stack new clean dishes on old clean dishes.

DUSTING! I hate it, probably mostly because I have yet to find any method that actually works without me having to remove every single thing (books!) from the shelves, wipe them, and put them back. Won't someone PLEASE invent a duster that really picks it up, instead of just spreading it around more!?

Cleaning the bathroom! (toilet, tiles, etc.) I like it to be very clean so I find myself doing this dreaded chore 1-2 times per week. When I can afford it, I would love to hire someone to help me clean, even if it was just my bathroom.

well, back when i had a w/d in my place, my most hated chore was vacuuming. but now that i have to go to a laundromat, it is definitely the 2 hours of hauling the dirty clothes to the car in their heavy tub, trying to snag washers and dryers somewhat close to each other, hauling all the heavy detergent in a backpack, not being able to hang clothes up straight from the dryer, sitting with a bag of damp clothes that i will line dry when i get home, etc etc etc.

but if restricted to chores inside the house, definitely still vacuuming. between the cat hair and the spiders, the floors and corners never really feel clean.

I don't understand the hatred of putting dishes AWAY?! that's the most satisfying part.

I'll to anything to put off doing dishes. I'll scrub the bathtub and the toilet before washing dishes.

I grew up in a dishwasher free household (actually, dad said we already had three of them - me mom and sis!) I've only had two apartments in my life with a dishwasher. So I've never understood people who keep the dishwasher full of clean dishes and then pile dirty dishes in the sink! Eww.. major pet peeve.

I'm in the "hate putting away" camp. Laundry and dishes and groceries. Just really annoying to me. It should be satisfying but somehow, it's not. I have to admit my laundry usually sits in the basket for days. Until I need the basket for new dirty stuff. So bad.

And I hate vacuuming. Mostly because I despise my vacuum. I have cats who shed so I have to vacuum all the time. I have lots of area rugs (7 in 700 sq ft) and I have to constantly switch from the "rug" setting to the "floor" setting. And I'm always worrying that the edges of my rugs will get caught up in the rotors and so I have to do this crazy split thing where I'm holding the far edge of the rug down with one foot as I very carefully guide the vacuum towards the edge. Drives me nuts. I clearly need a better vacuum.

Hate everything except laundry which I genuinely love to do. I love straightening the clothes and linens and putting them away all fresh and clean.

And I love to cook but I think we're talking about housecleaning chores?

The first thing I would do upon gathering my vast lottery winnings would be to hire a full-time live in housekeeper (well, maybe first buy a house big enough for a ...) I would love to have a perfect house with no dust and clean floors and my shoes polished and the windows washed.

I guess I am really weird because since I drastically downsized and purged so much of my stuff, there are not really any chores I hate. One advantage to a very tiny place and I love it all clean and tidy. I have a dishwasher but for just me I usually do them by hand. I have a clothes w/d so laundry is not a chore. Stove is self-cleaning and fridge is frost free. I can clean the whole tiny place thoroughly in about 1 hour. I guess vacuuming is my least favourite as mine is loud.

We live in the Caribbean so we also use screens, and putting away, washing and putting them back is not easy since we have to unscrew them from the window frames... and usually this kind of work takes most of the day to complete..

I dislike putting laundry away too. I don't mind folding it. Having one dresser is probably the reason. If I had a super wonderful storage solution I might not mind it. (I have plenty of hanging spaces, just not good space for stuff like socks and shorts.)

I don't mind vacuuming, dishes or dusting or anything else, really. It's too bad we all don't live in the same building so we could do one another's most hated chores.

Hmm . . . I'm must be in the minority. I absolutely HATE all housework and don't do much of it. My husband doesn't mind loading the dishwasher, he just refuses to put anything away. I told him it doesn't help much if all he does is put the clean dishes on the counter. Clean dishes don't look any better than dirty dishes: both clutter up the counters!

Hate: putting clean stuff away, drying dishes, shredding (Does anyone else hate shredding? Why is it so tedious??)

Don't mind: washing dishes, straightening up, making the bed.

I don't mind laundry, but it's a pain to do in this apartment complex. I have to trek up and down a hill. Oh well, I skip the gym those days! I used to hate folding my clothes until I started folding them right out of the dryer. Less wrinkles, too.

I like doing weird, random chores, like actually removing my windows and washing them or scrubbing the burners and inserts on my stove.

Dishes and laundry - period.

If I didn't have either of those "problem areas" my house would be a sanctuary of calm and order. But as it stands, the washing up spreads chaos through the land. It spreads and propagates disorder.

Love decorating, hate cleaning. But of course nothing looks better than a clean house! Soooo unfair. Handwashing silverware can bring out the existentialist in me, but least favorite of all least favorite chores has to be cleaning the ceiling fans. They catch everything from the air--dust, cat hair, the grunge of ages. Being more than 3 meters up (11 feet maybe?) I have to haul out the big ladder to wipe them down. Yech.

I love vacuuming (because I love seeing the lines in the carpet) , loading the dishwaser, scrubbing out my toilet ( I am convinced that the water in my town is full of some kind of mutating black fungus, so I clean my toilet OFTEN).

I hate anything related to floors; sweeping, vacuuming, mopping.

I also abhor folding and putting away clean laundry - an especially tedious task with all the minuscule clothes of my infant and toddler.

Dusting, cleaning grout, washing windows is strongly disliked as well.

I don't mind doing the dishes though as long as I didn't make roast chicken that night.

I also kind of hate putting dishes away. I never thought of it as "hate" before, but I always have a hard time stopping myself before starting on new dishes to put the clean ones away.

The thing I truly hate the most is taking out the trash. I don't know what my problem with it is, but I can't stand it. I think I'm just lazy and it involves going down a flight of stairs and walking up an down a bit of a hill. I have to put all my trash in grocery bags in order to make myself do it as often as I need to. If it's in a big trash bag, I'll just let it pile up.

Most of the time my stove top look far from perfect.

washing dishes is not one of my favorite chores either, but i'm with lindsey kathlene RE: laundry. i don't have a w/d and i have to walk (i don't drive) with a huge laundry cart full of as much dirty laundry as i can cram in there 4 1/2 blocks to the nearest laundromat. such a pain!!

i really hate cleaning tiles too....i have wall to wall tiles thru-out my apt. but now i have a black n decker power mop. not so bad now.
if i crank up some music while doing hated chores i find it's not so bad as long as i don't do it so early it could disturb neighbors. i actually like singing really badly while washing pain in the ass dirty dishes. sometimes i bring a sketchpad with me to the laundromat so that's not so bad.

ultimately when all my stuff is mostly clean and organized enough (i don't shoot for perfection)....then i can sit back, relax and feel good.

I load the dishwasher; husband unloads. Sometimes I have to hunt for things, but I never complain. He cleans the bathrooms, and does the floors. I do all the cooking, the rest of the cleaning, the washing & ironing. He will fold and put up, though. He does all the trash for weekly pickup.

I actually find ironing clothes somewhat soothing, and take great care in starching and ironing his shirts. I have a huge ironing board, cast and rolled aluminum c.1940---it weighs a ton. I have to make my own covers out of cotton drill, but I'll never part with it.

I'm sure I'll be alone on this one, but I hate shopping for food and necessary sundries. It's likely this is because I live in a big city full of people who are rude and oblivious, but it's also because I have to do it by bicycle and haul everything around in a back-pack or bicycle basket. Japanese shops are also narrow which means every housewife and grandma who feels it's necessary to carefully inspect every vegetable in the bin before she buys it blocks the narrow aisle and it's hard to get around and get it over with. Unfortunately, it seems there are plenty of people who feel they can't spend 100 yen on a bag of 3 onions without looking at the 50 other bags available just to be sure they get the VERY best one.

I'd happily clean anything in my apartment compared to putting up with what happens outside of it. At least then the only thing in my way is my own motivation or lack thereof.

I hate grocery shopping. I'm an indecisive person by nature, and there are too many choices and ethical consequences to consider. I also hate when food goes bad, and I make up meals as I cook them, so it's hard to plan it easily.

Also dislike laundry and putting away clean dishes. The first is because I miss having a line to dry things on it ties one to the house for a whole two hours the back stairs in my apartment are rickety and unpleasant. The second is because I'm short so it's hard to reach we seem to have more dishes than room for dishes. Also, on the rare occasion that we use the dishwasher as was intended, the dishes feel way too "squeaky" clean.
