apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Close-Up!: John Baden's SF Apartment

baden.jpg

Immediately after walking into John Baden's Hayes Valley apartment, we thought to ourselves, "This is so Apartment Therapy!"
Many of us can relate to John's situation: He's living in a place that's under 500 square feet — a rental — and can't resist the urge to personalize his space. Being a decorative painter, this of course means painting and re-painting his apartment. A lot.

Although we originally covered his home for the SF Chronicle, we wanted to share some additional photos with AT readers. The above image is from the Chron; after the jump, you can see the ones we took.

Bed Nook: A close-up of the headboard in the walk-in closet/bedroom. The oversized, tufted piece was picked up at the Alameda Antique Faire.

Bathroom: Tiny circular and oval mirrors dot the walls. The sink is Ikea.

Kitchen: Now this is a happy kitchen to wander into in the mornings.

Kitchen: Cartoonish faux wood paneling.

Kitchen: What to do with an archaic feature like the old ironing board cupboard? Turn it into a hidden bulletin board.

Entry: Another blast from the past — the phone nook — highlights local artist Darwin Bell's work.

Front Door: No part of the apartment is spared a paint treatment.

Thanks for letting us into your home, John!

Thanks for sharing the photos. The colors didn't look nearly as vibrant in the newspaper.

(And you know how much I love my colors bright...)

i should add this disclaimer: i'm a terrible photographer. (so mamachilanga - the colors are actually much better in person!)

Hooray for John Baden! This is proof positive that I don't feel the need to replicate patterns, treatment, etc., to appreciate that for others who like those elements.

I suggest also going to his site at http://www.badendesigns.com/ to see more pictures of his home and designs projects he has done for others.

Yeah, krister, this is definitely one of those places I'd love staying in as a B&B but couldn't live with long-term.

Refreshingly fearless, especially for a small space, where people usually stay very conservative and minimal.

Thanks for sharing!

I love this place and I'm going home to paint circles on my bathroom walls! It's one of those apartments that won't allow you to be in a bad mood.

I think this is terrific and so much more interesting than all that cookie-cutter midcentury business. I covet that headboard...wonder how I can make my own??

i turned my ironing board cupboard into a spice rack, and when we removed the ironing board there were newspapers from 1928 and 1945. love those old architectural touches.
