I love yellow tile in a kitchen...with antique appliances. But nothing really calls out to me here, except the glass cabinets. That would keep my cabinets in order!

The mixed modern and old school is very awesome. I definitely dig the yellow, but I don't think I could ever pull it off.

I like everything about this kitchen except the countertops.

Nice kitchen, but I don't see anything "budget" about it. Those cabinets look custom to me.

The marmoleum is pretty cool, though. I agree that the countertops don't match; perhaps a darker marble would have fit better.

I agree that everything but the counter tops looks fantastic. Even a simple white subway tile would look better.

The cabinets WERE custom....in 1927. I have the identical kitchen in a 1927 french chateau style house, with a very sensitive update of countertops, appliances, and walls. I'm lucky no one remodeled the place in say 1972.

Ummm yeah, that's custom cabinetry. It always seems like AT links to articles they never actually read. The article is about accessorizing on a budget -- nowhere does it say that the kitchen was designed on a budget.

Are you sure about calling the cabinets original to the house? Under mount sink = currently trendy, not 1927. Also, Schoolhouse Electric = NOT budget.

Possibly using color is a budget way to revamp a kitchen, but it doesn't look like this kitchen is an example of it.

I do like the kitchen though, I find the yellow appealing.

While Schoolhouse Electric ain't "cheap," they certainly aren't outrageous.

I disagree with the recommendation for a white subway tile countertop. It would make the kitchen too stark.

I read the article - it was created on a "budget." Maybe not what you would consider super-tight, but the cabinets were pre-made, not custom. The deep drawers? I think they make pre-made deep drawers. The counter? Budget. The faucet? Budget. The curtains? All the accessories? The floors? Budget. All these features were mentioned in the article as being able to save from blowing all the money.

They splurged on the sink, the refrigerator, and a third thing I already forgot.
They spent $125 on a salvaged beam. I don't know if that's cheap or not, and I used to work in that field. Seems expensive.

The clients wanted a yellow kitchen! It was their starting point. I do see this AT post as being more of an "revamp on the cheap, paint your kitchen yellow" angle, or even "make curtains and put out a nice bowl of fruit" to change up your kitchen a little, rather than "gut your kitchen and renovate it from top to bottom on a budget," and so starting from scratch and smart shopping is a different kind of story. But still!

Well, maybe I'll post my kitchen re-do when we have enough money to redo. And by enough money, I mean about $4,000. That's my really real budget. What do I have to work with? Try knotty pine cabinetry stained honey- and covered in 50 yrs of grease, red laminate countertops and backsplash, and green vinyl flooring. I was drawn to this photo because of the schoolhouse light (I bought a Lowe's version this weekend). I'm painting the existing cabinets bright white, splurging (for me) on granite countertops and short backsplash, and marmoleum floors-with my husband providing labor. With money 'left over' we'll put in a new stainless sink and new faucet. I can't wait. Right now, my kitchen makes me vomit.

I like this, and I usually hate yellow.
