apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bring the Outdoors In with Paint

0608_horizon01.jpg

Some Apartment Therapy readers liked the two-tone walls in this dining room from last week's 15 Dining Rooms with a View. Did you notice how the two-tone scheme relates to the outdoors?...

0608_horizon.jpgThe "horizon" line between tones aligns with the horizon line outside (at least when viewed from a standing position). Carrying this datum through the room is a subtle little nod to the outdoors beyond.

This photo was originally featured in Apartment Therapy Chicago's look at Cottage Living - Jan/Feb '08.

That light fixture is giving me flashbacks to Woody Allen's "Sleeper". :->

I really like the idea, but it would be more obvious with super-simple windows, not the ones in this room.

It works great here....but probably wouldn't pan out quite the same for most window scenes.

um, this only works if you are at the same level as the camera. Move your head up or down a few inches if you are in the room and the scene out the window shifts. I guess if this shot is eye level for the main residents, it works, but I'm guessing they were probably lining the paint up with the middle of the windows.

PhoebeArt is right. This was the photographer's editorial choice. It is not anything that anyone actually in the room would probably experience or notice unless you were looking for a way to visually organize the room for a picture.

As you get closer or farther from the window, the horizon line will shift out of alignment with the paint line.

I totally noticed when I saw the photo in the post last week and loved it - immediately saved it for inspiration! And I don't care if it's height-relative; I'm probably the only one who would notice in my house so I'd paint it to my standing height! HA!
