Close-Up! AB Chao's Dining Room

11-21-08 ab1.jpgA favorite dining room that we've shown here on AT:SF is from our Louisiana House Tour, AB Chao's Modern + Old = MOLD. It's not glamorous, with metallic wallpaper and expensive furniture. It's charming, simple, comfortable. Remember what AB said about it?

11-21-08 ab2.jpgThe table and piano were my grandmother's, and the Eames chairs were free: My favorite college history professor gave them to me.

11-21-08 ab3.jpgWe love that it looks like a fabulous place in which to be a dinner guest -- can't you just picture hanging out here for hours with good friends, great food, lots of wine, and music?

I love the rug too... reminds me of rugs I saw in Tunisia... "When I get rich, I'll go back to Tunisia and buy some awesome rugs!!!", that's what I've been saying ever since...

I believe that's a handmade one-of-a-kind rug (a Persian Sarouk??), but you can find a lot of similar rugs second-hand these days because oriental rugs have fallen out of fashion. If you're anywhere near Housing Works or a good consignment store, that's probably your best bet to get a good deal. (I'd avoid eBay unless you know a LOT about evaluating oriental rugs.)

Karastan also makes machine-made rugs based on oriental designs.

New Orleans Auction Galleries always has the most awesome Oriental rugs, in all sizes. I don't know where they're getting them, but they've got a good source.

Hey guys! Not sure about the rug's provenance -- I inherited it from my grandmother. I can tell you that it is enormous and heavy and badly needs to be cleaned.
