Inspiration: Tiffany Silverware

This silver is really quite special, with art nouveau patterns by Tiffany & Co. Now, we realize it's quite expensive, and this post isn't meant to advocate running out and purchasing these pieces. Rather, it's meant as a pause to simply enjoy these stunning works of functional art...

It amazes us what level of care, invention, and playfulness went into these utensils. Makes us want to introduce a little highly stylized flora and fauna (at a lower price point) into our own home.

FIRST ROW:

1 complete set of teaspoons, each with a different natural design (check out the spider pattern)
2 knife sharpener etched with a dragonfly pattern
3 delicate leaf pattern on a butter knife
4 bird on matching salad servers
5 fork set with various floral patterns

SECOND ROW:

6 flora knife handles
7 hand-hammered handle...
8 ...on a slotted spoon
9 turtles! absolutely wonderful

What great images - I love this old Tiffany silver...
...also in love with Georg Jensen silver.

For some reasonably priced and readily available sets reminiscent of this, I'd look to Horchow.

While Tiffany is always quite expensive, most used silver is surprisingly cheap. Fish around on eBay or at flea markets. There are wonderful patterns, for not much more than good stainless costs. (And if you use it every day, you don't have to polish it.)

I totally agree with Lisa. I got all my sterling flatware (in Gorham's Etruscan pattern, with a modern-looking Greek key design) on eBay, and it didn't cost a whole lot more than a heavy set of stainless flatware. Even though the pattern has been discontinued, there were tons of pieces available. And in New York City apartments with no dishwasher, you have to wash flatware by hand anyway -- so it's no extra work (other than a twice a year polishing).

I could happily spend all my money on old silver. I'd rather have it than new. And nothing tastes better than ice cream eaten with a silver spoon, served in your Grandmother's china.

Here's something similar and more affordable: http://www.fitzsu.com/baroque-flatware-faces-ferran-adria-p-6017.html?osCsid=sm1lugsjmdk5rku111sddn1l24.
