Downtown Portland is sometimes overlooked for the upscale Pearl District or up-and-coming Mississippi Avenue. But with its walkable blocks, free transit and ample home decor options, there are always good reasons to head to the central city.

This month, Oregon Home shines a spotlight on downtown with a three-part series about everything you won't want to miss in your travels. From contemporary craft at The Real Mother Goose to modern design at Canoe, we think they've done a bang-up job of capturing our favorites...and even spotting one or two (AM Living, for example) that this native hasn't yet visited herself!

AM Living is a fantastic store and you should definitely get down there and talk to Jarred, the manager, about the collection of restored campaign trunks from the Himalayas on display right now.
Fair warning: I work for this company and am awfully partial to our products.

I'll add a vote for Canoe. Great store. I bought the most amazing metal chess set from his store. It's the sort of unique purchase that always gets comments when people see it. Canoe is great for the little touches that go a long way. Also, the owner is a really great guy. I don't know him personally, but he remembers me when I drop by - and he isn't at all pushy (you know how some small stores can be). Canoe is definitely an awesome place to browse.
