Centerpiece Inspiration: Laura Normandin's Wedding

01normandin62409.jpgLaura Normandin, the talented artist behind Wren Handmade, used clusters of potted geraniums and herbs as centerpieces at her wedding, which is featured in this summer's Martha Stewart Weddings issue. We love the idea of decorating a dinner party or luncheon with potted plants, which can double as party favors. The brightly glazed ceramic pots Laura chose, along with the varied textures and colors of the plants, make for a beautiful, summery centerpiece...

As you can see in the background here, Laura continued the potted plant theme along a mantel and throughout the event space in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. This would be an easy, affordable way to decorate any party; terra cotta pots are inexpensive, as are many small-scale houseplants. Going with glazed ceramic pots increases costs a bit, but then you can choose a color palette to match your table settings, as Laura did.

Lovely idea. To cut costs, I would take co-ordinating fabric and tie it around the plastic pot the plants would come in. That would be cheaper, right?

I've seen cheap tin pots at Trader Joe's that came in really great colors withe plants already in them. You could easily paint designs on them to coordinate with fabrics.

I used potted plans to decorate tables at two baby showers.

At my sister's shower, I did individual potted plans. Each guest took one home - along with one of these little cookies - as a favor. See a picture here: http://lesleystedmanphotography.smugmug.com/photos/327395655_jJkPY-M.jpg

At a friend's baby shower, I nursed large potted plants along for months until they were huge and used them as decorations on the tables and throughout the room. I gave them away as game prizes.

The hardest part is just making sure everything is in bloom and looking good on party day. At my sister's shower, I actually bought some gerbera daisies at a local florist the day before and used those little picks that hold water to add a few blooms to the larger pots I was using as buffet decorations.

No one was the wiser and commented about how many blooms there were!

It looks lovely. To anyone who's done this: is there any problem with bugs going from plant to table? That would be my only hesitation. I love the look.

I love the potted plant look as well. For our wedding we took coffee cans and wrapped them with pretty paper. and then tied a ribbon around the center. each one was different. the flowers were a "hand-picked" style.
